제자연보호연맹(IUCN)이 ‘지구온난화의 영향으로 가장 극심한 멸종위기에 처한 생물 10종’을 발표했다. 열대어 흰동가리, 북극여우, 흰돌고래, 황제펭귄, 장수거북과 연어... 그 중에서 가장 눈에 띄는 동물은 바로 ‘코알라’다.
귀여운 외모와 온순한 성격, 진한 모성애의 상징으로 세계인의 사랑을 받는 코알라는 전 세계에서 오직 호주의 일부지역에만 서식하는, 극히 제한된 식성의 희귀동물이다. 주식인 유칼립투스 잎사귀에서 양분과 수분 모두를 섭취하는 이 동물의 이름 ‘코알라(koala)'는 ’물을 마시지 않는다‘는 뜻에서 유래한 것으로, 이들은 워낙 편식이 심한데다 공격성이 없고 속도마저 느린 탓에 다른 동물에 비해 천적의 공격이나 환경 변화에 매우 취약하다. 그런데 최근 도시화로 인해 맹렬한 속도로 서식지가 파괴되면서 코알라의 수가 급감하고 있다. 먹이를 찾지 못해 굶어죽거나 주택가에서 사나운 가축에게 공격을 당하고, 느린 속도로 도로를 건너다 자동차에 치어 사라져가는 것! 최근에는 ‘클라미디아’라는 치명적인 전염병까지 돌고 있어 코알라 멸종은 눈앞의 현실이 되고 있다. 6년 전만 해도 10만에 달하던 개체 수는 지금 그 절반에도 못 미치는 4만4천 마리! 전문가들은 이대로라면 30년 내에 지구상에서 코알라가 완전히 사라질 것이라고 말한다. 지상에서 가장 느리고 연약한 피조물 코알라! 그들에게 닥친 위기를 ‘혜수의 창’에서 들여다본다.
