삶의 시작점, 말라위 마칸디 교도소
아프리카 최빈국 중 하나인 말라위의 치치리 교도소. 800명이 정원인 이 교도소에서는 무려 1,760명의 수감자들이 생활한다. 하루 한 끼의 식사, 달랑 4개 뿐인 욕실 수도꼭지. 하지만 이런 비인간적인 말라위 교도소에도 희망은 있다. 바로 마칸디 교도소다. 그 중심에 한국인 김용진씨가 있다. 김용진씨는 재소자들과 함께 생활하며 그들에게 농업기술을 전수한다. 덕분에 수감자들은 교도소에서 농사를 짓고 수확한 곡식은 어려운 이웃들에게 기부까지 하고 있다. 교도소 안에서 시작된 작은 훈풍은 이제 말라위 사회 곳곳으로 퍼져나가고 있다. 새로운 삶을 시작하려는 이들의 힘찬 걸음을 만나볼 수 있다.
빛을 전하는 청년, 와돈고
전체인구 중 약 18%만 전기 혜택을 누리는 케냐. 등유를 살 돈이 없는 사람들은 해가 떨어지면 칠흑 같은 어둠 속에서 생활한다. 그런데 이들의 어두운 삶을 환히 비춰주는 남자가 있다. 바로 에반스 와돈고(23)다. 어린 시절, 전구가 없어 저녁만 되면 좋아하는 책읽기도 할 수 없던 그는 빈곤으로 인해 빛까지 잃는 악순환을 끊기 위해 직접 태양열 전등을 만들기 시작했다. 하나에 약 20달러인 전등 제작비를 위해 하루 한 끼만 먹는 와돈고! 그렇게 만든 태양열 전등을 그는 무료로 빛이 필요한 이들에게 나눠주고 있다. 어두운 나라 케냐를 밝히는 남자 와돈고를 만나보자.
