21세기 최악의 재앙, 아이티 대지진 6개월 후의 아이티를 찾았다. 폐허가 된 도시는 건물잔해와 천막, 부모 잃은 아이들로 가득했다. 무려 100만 명에 달하는 ‘지진 고아’다. 이 수는 지진 전에 비해 3배 가까이 증가한 것이다. 집은 물론 부모까지, 한 순간 지진으로 인해 삶의 모든 것을 잃은 아이들! 구걸과 매춘, 불법입양으로 위협받는 지진 고아들의 비참한 현실을 W에서 취재했다.
고아원에 가는 것이 소원, 거리에 홀로 남은 아이들
포토프랭스 거리를 뒤덮은 것은 건물잔해와 천막뿐이 아니다. 바로 구걸하는 아이들! “먹을 게 필요해요.” 하지만 굶주림에 지친 아이들이 갈 곳은 없다. 아무렇게 세워진 천막 안 맨 바닥이 그들의 유일한 보금자리다. 부모가 없는 아이들은 아예 길거리에서 노숙을 한다. 노숙을 하는 아이들의 삶은 처참하기 그지없다. 남자 아이들은 구걸이라도 하지만 열 서너 살 여자아이들은 살기 위해, 매춘에까지 내몰리고 있을 정도다. “음식을 달랬더니, 그들은 자기와 자야 한다고 했어요.” “돈을 벌고 싶으면 제 몸을 사용하라 했어요.” 단지 먹을 것을 얻기 위해, 매춘까지 불사해야 하는 아이들. 부모의 사랑으로 보호받아야 할 나이, 하지만 아이티 지진 고아들은 가녀린 몸으로 위험천만한 거리를 홀로 누비고 있다.
죽음보다 괴로운 삶, 아이티의 미래가 위험하다
사망 20만 명, 부상 33만 명의 대지진이 일어난 직후, 세계 각국은 원조를 약속했다. 그러나 국제사회의 지원은 대부분 이뤄지지 않았다. 정부의 무능력, 세계의 무관심 속에 살아남은 이들은 죽음보다 더 한 고통을 받고 있다. 거리에서 노숙을 하는 아이들의 소원은 다름아닌 고아원에 가는 것! 고아원에서는 안정적인 생활이 이뤄지는 것일까? 그러나 고아원도 열악하긴 마찬가지다. 모든 고아원이 포화상태일뿐더러 하루 한 끼뿐인 식사는 바나나와 콩이 전부다. 이들의 고통은 이뿐만 아니다. 바로 지진으로 인한 정신적 상처! “지진 때 큰 돌이 엄마 목에 떨어졌어요.” 지진 당시 엄마의 죽음을 목격한 형제는 아직도 악몽에 시달리고 있다. 그런데, 이들에게 더 한 불행이 다가오고 있다. 곧 우기가 시작되는 것이다. 올 우기에, 아이티는 허리케인의 위협에서 안전할 수 있을까? 아이티의 미래가 위험에 처해있다.
