최소한의 자원으로, 최대한의 삶을 즐기다!
미국 펜실베이니아의 한 마을, 이곳에 조셉 부부가 산다. 그의 집에는 쓰레기통은 있지만, 쓰레기는 없는 것! “유리, 쇠, 플라스틱은 분리수거해요. 퇴비로 쓸 수 있는 건 모두 더미로 가고요.” 태울 수 있는 것들은 연료로 쓰고 비닐 같이 분해 불가능한 것들은 헤질 때까지 쓴다. 음식쓰레기는 마당의 닭들 몫이다. 가장 충격적인 것은 바로 화장실! 그의 집엔 ‘20세기 최고의 발명품’이라 불리는 수세식 변기가 없다. 조셉 가족은 분뇨 수거통을 놓고 물 대신 톱밥으로 인분을 덮으며 배변을 해결한다. 이렇게 모인 인분은 채소밭의 비료로 쓴다. “유기농퇴비를 흘려보내면서 자연을 오염시키고 대신에 화학퇴비를 쓴다는 게 말이 안 되잖아요.” 모든 것을 자연에서 거두고, 다시 자연에게 돌려주는 조셉 젠킨스. 그는 최소한의 자원으로 최대한의 삶을 즐기고 있다.
단순한 삶, 일곱 번째 세대를 위한 첫 걸음
사실, 이 마을에 가장 먼저 친환경적 삶을 정착시킨 것은 마크와 카렌부부다. 30년 전, 그들 부부가 처음 친환경적 생활을 시작할 때만 해도 사람들은 의아해했다. “시아버지께서, 어째서 과거로 돌아가려고 하느냐고 하셨어요.” 하지만, 이내 조셉과 같은 동지들이 생겨났다. 과거로 돌아가는 삶이 아닌, 더 나은 미래를 향한 걸음이라는 인식이 확산되고 있으며 2세들에게까지 이어졌다. 조셉의 아들 오라이언은 아버지가 개발한 퇴비화 변기를 판매하고 있다. “말로 설득하기보단 자연의 아름다움을 보여줘서 사람들이 자발적으로 오염감소를 위해 노력하게 하고 싶어요.” 조셉 가족의 삶의 방식은 누구나 알고 있지만, 귀찮다는 이유로 실천하지 않는 것들이다. 하지만 조셉 가족은 이런 삶이야말로, 일곱 번째 세대를 위해 해야 할 일임을 알고 30년 째 실천하고 있다.
