세계에서 가장 많은 양의 영화를 제작하는 발리우드의 본고장, 인도의 최대 도시, 뭄바이! 고층빌딩들이 무수히 늘어서있는 이곳에 지상 최대의 빨래터, 도비가트가 있다. 180년의 역사를 자랑하는 이곳에 평생 빨래를 하면서 고단한 생계를 이어가는 빨래꾼, 도비왈라를 만나러 찾아갔다!
가장 낮은 곳에서 일하는 사람들
‘도비왈라’는 인도의 카스트제도에서 가장 낮은 계급으로 수드라에도 속하지 않는 불가촉천민. 1995년부터 차별은 공식 금지 되었지만 아직도 이곳에 대를 이어 도비로 살아가는 사람들이 많다. “4대가 여기서 일했죠, 할아버지, 아버지, 제 아들까지요.”(딜립) 스폰지 공장에서 일했던 딜립씨는 세습되는 신분 때문에 도비가트로 와야만 했다. 아버지와 함께 빨래를 하던 열여덟 살의 사이프 역시 대를 이어 열 두 살의 나이에 도비가 되어야했다. 도비들의 일과는 뭄바이 전역에서 들어오는 빨래를 분류하는 작업부터 시작된다. 모든 공정이 세분화되어있기 때문에 빨래들이 모두 세탁되어 나가기까지 10가지 공정을 거쳐야만 끝나는 고된 작업! 이렇게 이른 새벽부터 늦은 저녁까지 하루 16시간 이상을 일하고 받는 돈은 고작 500루피 정도, 우리나라 돈으로 약 5000원이 도비들의 하루 일당이다.
삶의 터전을 잃어버릴 위기에 놓인 도비들 - 누구를 위한 강제 철거인가
이런 도비들의 삶이 2년 전부터 시작된 정부의 재개발 정책으로 인해 그마저도 더욱 힘들어지고 있다. 이미 빈민가는 대부분 철거되었고, 이백년 가까이 꿋꿋이 버티고 있던 도비가트도 철거 대상에 들어간 상태. 이에 도비가트를 떠나는 도비들이 늘어나고 있었다. 그러나 생계를 유지할 일자리와 삶의 터전을 잃어버린 채 그들은 거리로 내몰리고 있었다. 하지만 정부는 어떠한 대안도 없이 상업 지구를 만들기 위한 철거 명령만을 밀어붙이고 있는 상태인 것!
