해발 1387m 고원에 위치한 미얀마 인레호수. 마지막 지상낙원이라 불리는 이곳에는 호수의 아들, 인다족들이 독특한 물위의 삶을 살아가고 있다. 하지만 최근 인다족의 삶에 큰 변화가 찾아왔다. 호수의 수량이 급속도로 줄어들면서 수상민족으로서의 존재 기반이 흔들리고 있는 것! 인레호수에 닥친 위기, 그 믿을 수 없는 현장에 찾아가봤다.
사라지는 호수, 고통 받는 인다족
길이 22km, 너비 11km, 미얀마에서 가장 큰 호수인 인레호수에는 30여 개 마을, 5만 여명의 인다족들이 살아가고 있다. 전통어로로 물고기를 잡고, 물에 띄운 밭 ‘쭌묘’에 토마토 농사를 짓는 인다족에게 호수는 삶의 터전이자 기반인 셈. 하지만 현재 수상마을 대부분이 물이 말라 땅을 드러내 놓고 있고, 호수였던 자리는 경작지로, ‘쭌묘’는 아예 땅에 붙어버렸다. “요즘은 물이 없어서 수상마을에서 육지마을로 바뀌었어요” 수량 감소는 수질오염으로 이어졌다. 인레호수의 변화는 인다족의 삶 자체를 바꾸어놓았다. “먹는 물은 5일에 한 번 떠오고, 생활용수는 하루에 세 번 정도 떠온다”
기후변화에 의한 지구온난화 문제?
전지구적인 기후문제, 지구온난화가 가장 큰 원인으로 추정되고 있다. “가뭄 때문인 것 같아요. 비가 안 오고, 너무 더워서 호수물이 점점 말랐어요“ 하지만 이유는 그것뿐만이 아니다. 인위적으로 자연환경을 바꾸어버리면서 재앙이 찾아왔다는 것! "배가 다니기 어려워서 굴착기로 터널을 만들었어요”, ”수력발전을 사용하려고 댐을 만들었어요. 물이 댐으로 많이 흘러 갔어요“ 또한 아무런 규제 없이 행해지는 부분별한 벌목은 토양유실로 이어졌고, 유실된 토양은 인레호수를 점점 잠식하고 있었다. ”모두가 함께 보호하지 않으면 20년 후에는 호수가 사라질 거예요“ 인레호수 없인 존재할 수 없다는 인다족, 이대로 방치할 경우 남아있는 삶의 터전마저 언제 사라질지 모르는 상황! 위기에 처한 인레호수, 그 충격적인 현장을 취재했다.

"But that is not the only reason. The disaster has come while artificially changing the natural environment! "I made a tunnel with an excavator because it was difficult to get into a ship", "I made a dam to use hydroelectric power, and water was pumped into the dam." In addition, partly logging without any regulation led to soil loss, "If everyone does not protect them, the lake will disappear after 20 years."
