아프리카 케냐의 수도 나이로비. 그 중심에는 ‘세계 3대 슬럼’ 중 하나인 ‘키베라’가 있다. 나이로비 인구의 절반에 가까운 150만 명이 여의도만한 면적에 모여 살지만, 정작 지도에는 키베라가 없다. ‘거대한 화장실’이라 표현될 정도로 더럽고 위험한 절망의 땅! 그런데 최근 이곳에서 한 무리의 청년들이 희망을 말하기 시작했다. 키베라의 뜨거운 태양 아래에서 시작된 특별한 반란! 키베라의 ‘시네마키즈’를 찾아갔다.
절망의 진창에서 피어난 풀꽃같은 아이들, 시네마키즈
‘키베라’란 수단어로 ‘정글’이라는 뜻. 정글에서는 생존 자체가 핵심이듯, 이들에게는 삶 이 전쟁과도 같다. 전기조차 없는 마을은 쓰레기와 악취로 뒤덮였고, 하루 천원도 안되는 돈을 벌기 위해 사람들은 거칠고 치열하게 살아간다. 그동안 몇 차례 외부 취재팀이 키베라의 험난한 현장들을 담아갔지만, 이후 그 어떤 지속적인 관심도, 변화도 찾아오지 않았다고 현지주민들은 말했다. 이제는 카메라만 보면 경계의 눈빛으로 피하거나 카메라를 부숴버리겠다며 항의하는 사람들! 그런데 작년, 미국인 ‘나단 콜렛’이 키베라를 찾아와 이곳을 배경으로 단편영화를 제작했다. 국제영화상을 7개나 수상한 그가 돌아와 ‘핫썬(Hot Sun)’이라는 이름의 영화제작사와 학교를 설립하면서, 변화의 바람은 시작됐다.
나이로비 사람들에게 키베라는 범죄와 가난, 쓰레기로 얼룩진 절망의 땅일 뿐이지만, 이곳의 시네마키즈는 키베라가 더 이상 빈민촌이 아니라고 말한다. “렌즈를 통해 보면 키베라는 멋진 갈색이에요. 저는 이곳을 '초콜릿 도시'라고 불러요”어둡게 왜곡된 키베라가 아닌, 살아있는 키베라의 이야기를 스스로 찾아내 직접 말하기 시작한 영화학교 아이들! 절망의 땅에서 피어나는 그 역동적인 삶과 희망의 몸짓을

Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. At the heart of it is the 'Kibera', one of the 'world's three slums'. Approximately half of Nairobi 's population, 1.5 million people, live in the area of Yeouido, but there is no Kibera on the map. A land of despair that is dirty and dangerous enough to be described as a 'giant toilet'! Recently, however, a group of young people began to speak hope. A special revolt started under the hot sun of Kibera! I went to 'Cinema Kids' in Kibera.

'Kibera' means 'jungle' in the word. In jungle, life itself is like war. Villages without electricity are covered with garbage and odors, and people live wild and hard to earn less than a thousand won a day. A few outside teams have been covering the toughest sites of Kibera, but local residents have said they have not found any sustained interest or change since. Now, if you look at the camera, you can avoid the bosom of the border, or protest against destroying the camera! But last year, the American Nathan Collet came to Kibera and produced a short film based on this background. The wind began to change as he returned with seven international film awards and founded a film production company named "Hot Sun".
For the Nairobi people, Kibera is just a land of crime, poverty, and scarred despair, but Cinema Kids here says that Kibera is no longer a slum. "Looking through the lens, Kibera is a nice brown.
