인구 15만의 스럶가 고로고초에서는, 매주 10여 차례에 가까운 강간 사건이 발생하고 있다. 피해자의 대다수는 어린 아이들이지만, 60대 이상의 노인들도 20%나 된다. “노인과 성관계를 가지면 에이즈가 낫는다고 믿어요.”(마을주민) 근거 없는 속설은 살인으로까지 이어진다. 쿵푸를 배우는 60대의 할머니는, 친구들 중 세 명이 강간당한 뒤 살해당했다고 털어놓았다. 얼마 전, 토막 난 할머니 시신이 인근 하천에서 발견된 사건은 고로고초의 노인들을 더욱 두렵게 만들었다. 세 명의 청년에게 강간당한 뒤 목숨까지 잃을 뻔 했던 아흔 셋의 플로렌스 할머니. 범인들은 아는 사람들이었지만, 경찰에 신고하지 못했다. “신고하면 범인 친구들이 찾아와 죽일까봐서요.”
