위험천만한 섬 민다나오! 그 곳에도 평화는 있다
민다나오는 30년 간 계속 된 내전으로 세계에서 가장 위험한 지역 중 하나로 꼽힌다. 기독교 정부군과 이슬람 반군 사이의 유혈충돌이 끊이지 않는 상황! 무슬림 무장단체들이 외국인을 상대로 납치와 살인을 저지르기도 해 무장경찰을 대동하지 않고는 통행도 불가능하다. 그런데, 이 위험한 곳에 분쟁과 내전 없이 평화롭기 만한 마을이 있다! 바로 ‘카난’. 지도에도 나오지 않는 오지인 카난은 길이 험해 자동차로 이동도 불가능할 정도다. W는 무장경찰의 경호 하에 말을 타고 험한 길을 오른 후에야 카난에 도착했다. 소를 끌어 밭을 갈고, 사람들이 직접 씨를 뿌려 작물을 재배하는 평화로운 마을! 위험천만한 섬에 세상 어느 곳보다 평화로운 마을을 일군 것은 마을 지도자, 써니보이 부부다.
종교를 넘어선 사랑. 마을을 평화로 물들이다
원래 카난은 무슬림과 기독교 마을 사이에 위치한 마을이었다. 다른 종교의 마을이 나란히 위치한 탓에 서로의 마을을 넘나들며 유혈충돌이 끊이지 않았다. 그런 이곳에 평화가 오기 시작한 것은 10년 전. 무슬림 반군 사령관 써니가 카난 마을 목사의 딸과 결혼하면서부터다. 내전 당시 카난에 왔던 써니는 앨리스를 보고 첫 눈에 반해 종교도 잊은 채 그녀에게 구애했다. 진심어린 구애에 앨리스도 결혼을 승낙, 두 사람은 종교간 대립이 팽팽한 민다나오에서 종교를 뛰어넘어 부부가 되었다. 결혼 후, 써니는 무슬림 반군 사령관의 자리도 버린 채 종교를 떠나 모두가 평화로운 마을을 만들기 시작했다. 그곳이 바로 ‘카난’! “신의 뜻이라 생각해요. 평화를 지키는 게 우리 미래예요” 써니 부부가 일궈 낸 작은 마을 카난. 지금은 내전에 지친 이들이 모여 60가구가 따뜻한 삶을 보내는 평화로운 마을이 되었다.
