멸종 위기에 놓인 바다거북의 최후
멕시코 푸에르토 바야르타 해안, 모든 불빛이 사라지는 깊은 밤이면 어김없이 홀로 나타나는 남자가 있다. 바로 바다거북 보호 활동가인 ‘오스카 아란다’이다. 밤 10시부터 새벽 6시까지 밤새도록 그가 하는 일은, 알을 낳기 위해 육지로 올라오는 바다거북들을 지키는 것이다. 매년 6월~12월까지, 산란기 때만 되면 바다거북의 고기와 알을 노린 밀렵꾼들이 기승을 부리기 때문이다. 현재 모든 바다거북은 사이테스(CITES-멸종의 우려가 있는 야생동식물종의 국제거래에 관한 협약)에 의해 멸종 위기 종으로 지정되어 보호받고 있다. 하지만 바다거북의 알이 스태미나 음식이라고 믿으며, 바다거북 고기로 만든 별식을 즐겨온 멕시코인들 사이에서는 여전히 불법으로 거래되고 있는 상황. 이로 인해 이동하는 바다거북의 80퍼센트 이상이 중미지역에서 최후를 맞고 있다.
바다거북을 지키는 사나이 ‘오스카 아란다’
10년 전, 밀렵꾼에 의해 처참하게 죽은 바다거북을 보고 보호 활동을 시작한 ‘오스카 아란다’ 밀렵꾼 감시는 물론, 바다거북이 낳은 알들을 안전한 장소로 옮겨 부화시키는 일까지 모두 혼자 힘으로 해내고 있었다. 바다거북이 산란하는 과정은 1시간에서 2시간이면 끝나는데, 이때 어미 거북의 몸에서 나오는 알은 탁구공만한 크기로 표면은 말랑말랑하다. 알이 떨어질 때 부딪혀서 깨지지 않게 하기 위해서다. 부화가 끝낸 바다거북이 바다로 돌아가면 오스카 씨는 조심히 알을 파내어 안전한 곳으로 운반한다. 그렇게 10여 년간 아란다씨가 밀렵꾼과의 갈등을 참아내면서도 바다로 되돌려 보낸 새끼 바다거북은 무려 50만 마리에 이른다!
