21세기에 오직 활과 화살만으로 먹고 사는 사람들이 있다. 농사를 짓는 법도 없고, 정해진 법률도 없다. 외부 문명을 거부하고 사냥과 수렵으로 자신들만의 생활을 고집하고 있는 사람들. 탄자니아 북부에 살고 있는 하드자베족에게선 1만 년 전 원시 인류의 마지막 흔적을 찾을 수 있다. 뜨거운 대륙 아프리카에서 자연과 함께 삶을 꾸려가고 있는 그들을 W에서 만나본다.
수렵과 사냥으로 21세기를 살아가는 사람들, 탄자니아 하드자베족
가장 오랜 인류의 발상지로 알려져 있는 탄자니아의 북부 지역. 여기 1만년 전이나 다를 바 없는 생활을 고집하고 있는 하드자베족이 있다. 스무 명 가량 무리지어 살아가는 이들에게 가장 중요한 대사는 바로 사냥이다. 건기가 한참인 요즘, 바짝 말라버린 초원에선 사냥감을 찾기 힘들 지경이다. 하지만 욕심 없는 이들은 배고프면 나무의 뿌리를 캐고, 가끔 잡히는 원숭이에 행복하다. “사냥을 못하면 먹을 것도 없어요. 매일 돌아다니면서 먹을 것을 찾아야 하죠.” 그들은 신을 믿는 대신 천년동안 같은 자리에서 뿌리를 내린 바오밥 나무를 존경한다. 좋아하는 원숭이가 잡히지 않을 때나, 다른 동물들을 찾아 길을 떠날 때에도 언제나 바오밥 나무를 향해 기도를 올린다. 땅을 더 갖기 위해 다른 부족을 공격하지도 않고, 그저 자연에서 모든 것을 얻으며 살아가는 순수한 하드자베족. 그런데, 그들에게도 위기가 찾아왔다.
자연에서 살아가는 행복을 빼앗지 말라! 하드자베족
하드자베족의 삶을 위협하는 것은 탄자니아 정부다. 10년 전에는 정착촌을 만들고 이들을 강제로 이주시켰지만, 하드자베 부족 대부분이 불과 이주일 만에 숲으로 도망치고 말았다. 그 뒤로도 정부는 현대화 정책에 걸림돌이 된다는 이유로 문명을 받아들이라고 끊임없이 회유하고 있다. “ 정부는 가끔 우리에게 신발과 바지를 가져다줍니다. 그들은 우리가 벌거벗고 다니는 것을 좋아하지 않는 거죠.” “정부는 천천히 다가와서 우리 삶을 바꾸려 하는 게 문제에요. 우리는 자연이 좋습니다.” 주변 부족들이 가축이나 농작물을 기르면서, 이들이 자유로이 돌아다닐 수 있는 땅이 점점 좁아지고 있다.
