고개를 돌릴 수 없다. 몸을 편히 누일 수도 없다. 다리로는 그저 서있을 뿐, 걸음을 뗄 수조차 없다. 볼 수 있는 거라곤 회색 시멘트와 바닥에 뒤엉킨 배설물이 전부인 일생. 바로 뉴질랜드 돼지들의 삶이다. 평균수명이 10~20년인 돼지. 하지만 뉴질랜드 돼지 중 45%는 채 4년도 살지 못 하고 폐사한다. 대체 그 까닭은 무엇일까? 죽어가는 돼지들을 위해 거리에 나선 남자가 있다. 바로 뉴질랜드의 유명 코미디언 마이크 킹. 때 아닌 돼지 살리기 논란으로 뜨거운 뉴질랜드에선 과연 어떤 일이 벌어지고 있는 것일까? 그 치열한 논란의 현장이 W에서 공개된다!
돼지를 지키는 코미디언 마이크 킹
한산한 거리. 그러나 전단을 돌리는 한 남자 주위는 사람들로 발 디딜 틈 없다. 남자에게 받은 전단을 유심히 보는 사람들. 버리기 일쑤인 길거리 전단에 사람들은 왜 열중하는 것일까? 취재진은 전단을 돌리는 남자를 따라나섰다. 전단을 주기도 전에 사람들로부터 쉴 새 없이 사진촬영을 요구받는 이 남자는 바로 뉴질랜드의 유명 코미디언 마이크 킹. 인기 연예인이 거리를 홀로 누비는 것도 모자라 사람들에게 전단을 나눠주다니! 대체 무슨 일일까?
마이크 킹이 거리로 나온 것은 2009년 5월. 다름 아닌 돼지를 지키기 위해서였다. 그는 돼지의 비인도적 양육방식을 고발하고 돼지 방목운동을 펼치고 있다. 충격적인 사실은 마이크가 뉴질랜드 양돈협회의 홍보모델이었다는 것! 하지만 그는 돼지의 공장식 사육을 고발하는 다큐멘터리를 접한 뒤 양돈협회 모델 활동을 접고 돼지의 자유를 위한 운동을 시작했다. “돼지들은 희망을 잃은 채 독방에 갇혀있는 죄수들 같았어요.” 공장식 사육의 스트레스로 쇠창살을 씹고 거품을 문 돼지의 처참한 모습을 본 마이킹. 그는 그 길로 돼지를 지키는 코미디언이 되어 거리로 나왔다.
철제구조물 한 칸이 인생의 전부인 돼지들
칠흑 같은 어둠과 코를 찌르는 악취! 도저히 숨 쉴 수 없을 것 같은 축사 안이 돼지들에게 허락된 유일한 공간이다. 임신을 할 경우 100kg에 육박하는 돼지들! 하지만 돼지들은 폭 60cm, 길이 2m의 비좁은 공간을 벗어날 수 없다. 오직 임신과 출산만이 반복되는 돼지들의 생! 뉴질랜드의 공장식 돼지 사육의 실태를 고발한 다큐멘터리 한 편으로 뉴질랜드는 올바른 돼지 사육법 논란으로 들썩였다. “잔혹한 짓이다. 움직일 수 있어야 한다.” 거리에서 만난 사람들은 하나같이 입을 모아 방목 사육을 지지했다.
