아프리카의 한 교도소. 좁아터진 골방에서 재소자들이 우르르 몰려나와 식사를 받는다. 그런데 흑인들뿐인 재소자들 사이에서 낯익은 얼굴이 한 명 보인다. ‘닥터 킴’이라고 불리는 한 한국인! 그가 바로 재소자들에게 웃음을 되찾아 준 주인공이라는데, 그는 누구일까?
하루 한 끼의 식사, 그리고 기약 없는 수감생활
국토 면적 1/5이 호수인 호수의 나라, 말라위. 티 없이 맑은 천혜의 자연환경을 가지고 있지만, 가난의 굴레에서 벗어나지 못한 아프리카 최빈국 중 하나다. 지속되는 가뭄에 생활고를 견디지 못한 이들은 어쩔 수 없이 생계형 범죄를 저지르기도 한다.
말라위의 수도 릴롱궤에서 차로 5시간을 달려간 도시 블랜타이어에 위치한 치치리 교도소. 이곳 역시 궁핍한 생활에 어쩔 수 없이 범죄를 저지르게 된 사람들이 대부분이다. 800명이 정원인 교도소에 무려 1,760명의 수감자들이 생활하고 있다. 식사는 하루 한 끼만 제공되고, 욕실 수도꼭지는 달랑 4개뿐이다. 하지만 열악한 환경보다 더 믿을 수 없는 현실은 따로 있었다. “재판조차 받지 못해 정해진 형기도 없이 3년 내내 이곳에 갇혀 있습니다.” 한 재소자는 교도관 몰래 취재진에게 쪽지를 전해주며 말했다. 그는 변호사를 선임할 돈은커녕 얼마 되지 않는 벌금조차 낼 돈이 없어 재판도 받지 못하고 기약 없이 교도소에 갇혀 있는 상황이라 했다.
교도소를 새로운 삶의 시작으로 뒤바꾼 닥터 킴!
운 좋게 재판을 받아 출소를 하더라도 아무런 기술도 없는 출소자들은 또 다시 생활고에 빠질 수밖에 없다. 하지만 이런 막막한 말라위 교도소의 현실을 멋지게 뒤바꾼 이가 있었으니, 바로 ‘닥터 킴’! 한국인 김용진 박사는 말라위 교도소를 새로운 삶을 출발하는 시작점으로 바꾸어 놓았다. 그가 재소자들과 함께 일하는 마칸디 교도소는 분위기부터 여느 말라위 교도소와 달랐다. 가장 신기한 것은 교도소에 담장이 없다는 것! 사회에 부드럽게 적응할 수 있도록 담장을 없앴다며 그는 입을 열었다. “상당수가 정말 무죄라고 느껴지는 생계형 범죄자들이에요. 그리고 아프리카 사람들은 절대 게으르지 않아요.” 열심히 다시 삶을 살아갈 준비가 되어있는 이들에게 김용진 박사는 새로운 기회를 주고 있다. 재소자들과 함께 교도소의 텃밭을 일궈 옥수수 농사를 짓고, 일 년 동안 수확한 옥수수를 고아원에 기부까지 하고 있는 것! “제가 다른 사람을 도울 수 있다니…. 정말 행복합니다.” 옥수수 포대를 옮기던 재소자는 활짝 웃으며 말했다.
스물여섯의 딕슨 씨 역시 마칸디 교도소에서 김용진 박사를 만난 덕에 출소 후, 새로운 삶을 살고 있다. 출소자들은 사회에서 다시 일을 구하기 힘들지만, 마칸디 안에서 기술을 더 배웠을 뿐만 아니라 가치관도 변한 딕슨 씨는 건설 일을 시작한 것. “앞으로도 열심히 해 더 좋은 일을 하고 싶어요.” 딕슨 씨의 부인 역시 남편이 달라졌다며 환히 웃었다.
취재진이 눈으로 보고서도 믿기 어려울 만큼 열악한 말라위 교도소의 현실. 하지만 마칸디 교도소 담장 안에서 시작된 작은 훈풍은 담장을 넘어 말라위 사회 곳곳으로 퍼져나가고 있었다. 재소자들의 손을 맞잡고 다시 삶을 시작할 용기를 준 한국인 김용진 박사! 머나먼 타지에서 시작한 닥터 킴의 꿈

Chichiri Prison is located in the city of Blantyre, a 5-hour drive from the capital of Malawi, Lilongwe. Here too, most of the people who have committed crimes inevitably in their deprived lives. There are 1,760 prisoners living in prisons with a capacity of 800 people. Only one meal per day is provided, and only four bathroom faucets. But there was a reality that was more unbelievable than a harsh environment. "I have not even been given a trial, so I'm stuck here for three years without any prisoners," said one prisoner, informing the guards and telling the reporter. He said he had no money to pay a lawyer or even a fine, so he was locked in prison without trial.
Doctor Kim who turned prison into a new life!
Those who are lucky enough to be released from the trial and have no skills are forced to live again. But there was a man who had a great turn on the reality of this vicious Malawi prison, 'Doctor Kim!' Kim Yong Jin, a Korean, has turned Malawi prison into a starting point for a new life. The Makandi prison, where he works with the inmates, was different from any other Malawian prison. The most surprising thing is that there is no fence in the prison! He opened his mouth, saying that he removed the fence so that he could adapt smoothly to society. "A lot of them are real-life criminals who feel really innocent. And Africans are never lazy. "Dr Yong Jin Kim is giving new opportunities to those who are ready to live hard again. We work with prisoners to cultivate the cornfields of prisons and donate corn harvested for a year to orphanages! "I can help others ... . I am really happy. "The inmate who moved the corn container laughed and laughed.
Twenty-six Dixon also lives a new life after being released after meeting Dr. Kim Yong-jin at Makindi Prison.
