처음 사원에 제비가 모이기 시작한 것은 39년 전. 당시 2쌍에 불과하던 제비가 이제는 만 마리에 이를 정도다. 어디 그 뿐이랴~ 여름 철새인 제비는 겨울이 되도 사원을 떠날 줄 모른다는데... 아침 6시 반에 사원을 나가 저녁 7시만 되면 꼬박꼬박 사원으로 되돌아온다는 제비들, 이 곳의 제비들은 우리나라를 찾는 제비들과는 다른 바다제비들이다.
바다제비들의 둥지는 최고급 중국 요리의 재료로 인기만점. 제비집 1KG에 우리 돈 2백 만원을 호가한다는데...때문에 사원 인근 마을 주민들 사이에선 이 바다제비 유치경쟁까지 벌어졌다. 작게는 150만원짜리 단독주택에서 10억을 호가하는 제비전용 아파트까지 우후죽순 들어서고 있다고..
