바라나시의 한 수용시설 ‘묵티 바반(해탈의 집)’은 임종을 맞이하려는 사람들이 모이는 곳이다.
이승을 떠야 할 시기가 왔음을 깨달으면 그들은 바라나시를 찾는다.
그들의 조상들이 그러했듯이.... 바라나시에서 숨을 거두면 과거의 업을 모두 씻을 수 있고 번뇌로 가득 찬 이 세상에 두 번 다시 태어나지 않는다고 믿는다.
힌두교 7대 성지(聖地) 가운데에서도 으뜸이라는 바라나시. 바라나시는 어떻게 해탈을 약속받은 도시가 되었나?
▷ 갠지스 위에 떠 있는 강(江)의 도시, 바라나시
히말라야에서 발원해 남동쪽으로 흐르던 갠지스가 북쪽으로 방향을 트는 바로 그 변곡점에 바라나시가 있다.
동틀 무렵 강가에는 발 디딜 틈 없는 인파가 몰려온다. 여신(女神)으로 숭배되는 갠지스와 태양신 수리아를 동시에 온몸으로 느낄 수 있는 곳은 인도에서 바라나시뿐이기 때문이다.
▷ 해탈에 이르는 도시, 바라나시
바라나시는 화장터를 중심으로 발달한 도시이다.
시 중앙에 위치한 화장터에는 인도 전역에서 시체들이 운구 되어 온다.
“람 남 샤티 헤! (신의 이름만이 진리이다)”를 외치며유족들이 시체를 바라나시로 모셔와 한번도 꺼진 적이 없다는 신성한 불로 시체를 태운다.
유족들은 바라나시에서 화장을 해야만 두 번 다시 이 세상에 태어나지 않는 해탈의 경지에 이를 수 있다고 믿고 있다.
▷ 도시의 비밀 - 바라나시에 쉬바가 있다
바라나시가 해탈을 약속받은 이유는 쉬바신 때문이다.
남성 생식기 모양의 상징물로 숭배되는 신 쉬바.
힌두교 고전에서 말하길‘우주의 탄생은 바라나시에서 시작되었고, 바라나시를 만든 이는 쉬바신이다“ 힌두교도들은 쉬바신의 삼지창 위에 세워진 도시인 바라나시에서 죽으면 쉬바신의 도움으로 해탈할 수 있다고 믿는다.
▷ 성지(聖地) 바라나시의 역사
1836년 영국 고고학자들의 발굴을 통해 붓다가 도를 깨닫고 처음으로 설법을 행한 곳이 바라나시임이 밝혀졌다.
붓다는 득도 직후 왜 바라나시를 찾았을까?
BC 7세기부터 흥하기 시작한 바라나시는 당시 모든 경제, 사상의 중심지였다.
불도를 전파하기 위해서 바라나시에서 먼저 검증을 받기로 결심한 붓다의 선택!
바라나시에 관한 최초의 문헌 기록인 현장의 “대당서역기” 그리고 이곳을 찾은 최초의 한국인 혜초의 “왕오천축국전”에도 쉬바의 도시 바라나시에 관한 기록이 남겨져있다.
“바라나시국의 도성은 갠지스에 면해 있다.
천사(天嗣)가 백여 개가 되고 외도가 만여 명이 되는데 모두가 쉬바를 신봉하고 있다.
이곳사람들은 갠지스를 福水라 부르면 아무리 죄가 많아도 이 강에서 목욕하면 죄가 없어지고, 죽어서 유해를 이 강에 넣으면 지옥에 떨어지는 일이 없다고 한다.“ - 현장의 “대당서역기”중에서 -
▷ 바라나시의 위기
서울대 종교학과 강사 류경희 씨는 바라나시의 비밀을 풀기 위해 매년 바라나시를 찾는다.
이번 바라나시행에서 그녀가 확인하려는 것은 한 소년의 생사...지난겨울 친하게 지냈던 아킬란다 미슈라(18세)는 바라나시의 원숭이 사원에서 전통악기 따블라를 연주하며 지낸다.
그런데 그 원숭이사원에서 올해 3월 폭탄테러가 일어나 23명이 사망했다. 왜 신성한 쉬바의 도시인 바라나시 사원에서 폭탄테러가 일어났을까?
인도 최초의 이슬람 통일왕조 무굴제국의 아우랑제브는 바라나시를 파괴하고 주민들의 이슬람 개종을 강요했다.
그 결과 지금도 이곳 주민의 30%는 무슬림이다. 이번 폭파사건의 주도자는 무슬림세력이었다. 이슬람 세력에 의해 도전받고 있는 힌두교의 성지 바라나시의 미래는 어떻게 될까? 폭발현장의 중심에 있었던 소년을 살아서 만날 수 있을까?
