태양이 작열하는 여름, 참나무 숲속에서는 수액을 두고 싸움을 벌이는 장수풍뎅이를 볼 수 있습니다.
몸길이는 30-90mm로 변이가 큰 곤충으로 알려져 있는 장수풍뎅이. 적갈색의 투구를 입고 나무 위를 걸어가는 수컷 장수풍뎅이는 자신의 몸무게의 50배가 넘는 물건도 끌거나 들 수 있다고 합니다.
이런 장수풍뎅이에게 적이 있을까요? 참나무 수액을 먹는 곤충들은 장수풍뎅이 말고도 많이 있습니다.
긴 집게를 가진 사슴벌레, 벌들의 제왕 장수말벌도 그 중 하나입니다.
장수풍뎅이는 야행성으로 주로 밤에 행동합니다. 낮 동안은 장수말벌에게 최강자의 자리를 내어 주지만, 늦은 밤, 장수풍뎅이가 깨어나게 되면 그를 이길 자는 없습니다.
이렇듯 강한 장수풍뎅이 이지만, 장수풍뎅이에게도 약한 유년의 시절이 있습니다.
총 3령으로 1령은 15일, 2령은 19일, 3령은 120일 정도의 기간이 필요합니다. 자연 상태에서는 2령으로도 겨울나기를 하지만 대부분 3령의 애벌레로 겨울을 보냅니다. 겨울을 지난 애벌레는 번데기가 되기 위해 몸에 에너지를 최대한 저장할 수 있도록 산속에 있는 부엽토나 부식된 나무를 먹고 자라는데 주로 그 속에 있는 무기질과 섬유질, 미생물들이 먹이원이 됩니다.
생물이 소생하는 봄이 오면 장수풍뎅이도 번데기가 될 준비를 합니다. 땅속에 번데기 방을 세로로 만들어 땅에서 쉽게 나올 수 있도록 합니다. 약 3~7일 정도 휴식을 취한 후 몸을 단단히 굳힌 장수풍뎅이는 땅위로 올라와 제왕의 삶을 살아갑니다.
