남대문의 복원을 일본인이 하게 된다면 어떨까?
일본의 국보급 건물인 메구로가조엔 복원 공사를 한국의 무명 옻칠장이가 하게 되는 충격적인 사건이 벌어진다.
주인공은 바로 드라마틱한 인생을 살아온 옻칠예술가 전용복.
가난과 슬픔으로 얼룩진 유년시절을 거치고 난 뒤 우연히 마주친 옻칠의 세계에 매혹되어 전 생애를 옻칠에 바쳐 왔다.
현재 세계 최대의 옻칠 미술관인 이와야마 칠예미술관의 관장, 전용복 칠예연구소 소장을 맡고 있으며, 일본 이와데 현의 문화예술진흥심의회 위원으로 활동하고 있다.
한국과 일본을 오가며 작품 활동과 제자를 양성하고 있는 그는 배우 김혜수와 배용준의 스승으로도 유명하다.
불우했던 어린 시절을 극복하고 명장으로 우뚝 선 그의 삶에서 찾은 희망의 메시지를 시청자들에게 전달하고자 한다.
