그로부터 정확히 100년이 지난 오늘, 한국사 傳에서 이준 열사의 행적을 따라간다!
대한제국의 외교특사로 네덜란드 헤이그에 입성한 이준. 그러나 그는 외교활동을 펼친 지 20일 만에 사망한다.
100년 전, 그에게 과연 무슨 일이 벌어졌던 것일까?

세계열강들이 모두 모인 헤이그 만국평화회의. 여기에 참석하는 것은 곧 대한제국이 주권국가라 는 하나의 증거였다. 고종황제의 명을 받아 헤이 그에 당당히 발을 디딘 3인의 특사 - 이준, 이상 설, 이위종. 이들은 어떻게 일본의 삼엄한 감시를 뚫고 네덜 란드 헤이그까지 온 것일까? 그리고 이들이 만국 평화회의에서 얻고자 한 것은 무엇일까?

일본의 방해공작! 첩보활동의 전모가 드러나다
천신만고 끝에 헤이그에 도착한 3인의 특사. 그러나 만국평화회의 장소에 들어가지 못한다. 아군이라 믿었던 러시아 측의 배신과 일본의 교묘한 방해공작으로 대한제국이 최종 참가국 명단에서 빠진 것이다. 당시 헤이그에서 이준 특사 일행의 일거수일투족을 감시했던 일본의 첩보자료를 한국사 傳 제작진이 입수했다.

치열한 외교전 - 당시 언론에 대서특필된 활약상 전격 공개!
열강들의 이해관계와 일본의 물밑작업으로 결국 회의장에 들어서 지 못한 이준 특사 일행. 그러나 이들은 여기서 포기하지 않았다. 일본의 만행과 을사늑약의 부당함을 알리는 연설과 함께 호소문 을 만들어 세계 언론인들과 시민운동가, 기자들에게 배포했다. 당시 헤이그 특사의 활약상을 담은 신문을 한국사 傳에서 공 개한다. 이준 특사일행의 활약상은 당시 평화회의보 1면으로 대서특필됐 고 뉴욕타임즈를 비롯해 서방언론들이 한국에 대한 기사를 싣 기 시작하면서 위기에 처한 대한제국의 사정을 세계에 알리는 계기가 됐다.
이준은 왜 갑자기 죽은 것일까?
장외 외교가 한창 진행되던 중, 이준은 돌연 호텔방에서 죽은 채로 발견된다. 이준은 왜 갑자기 죽은 것일까? 한국사 傳 제작진이 100년 전 그의 죽음에 대한 단서를 찾아 나섰다.
당시 발행된 이준의 사망기록부다. 그러나 여기에도 사인은 기록되어 있지 않았다. 죽음의 원인이 정확히 밝혀지지 않은 상황 에서 일본은 이준이 병으로 죽었다고 여론 몰이를 한다.
한국인 이준이 단독에 걸려 어제 사망한 것으로 오늘 아침에 매장했음.
장지에 모인 사람은 호텔종업원과 동행한 한국인 뿐 이었음

일본은 이준이 죽은 뒤에도 궐석재판을 열어 이준에게 종신징역을 선고하는 만행을 저질렀다.

헤이그에서 쓸쓸히 숨진 이준 열사의 유해는 그가 숨진 지 56년만인 1963년에서야 고국으로 돌아왔다. 한국사 傳은 이준 열사가 묻힌 수유리 묘지를 찾아 한국 역사 속에서 이준이 남긴 것이 무엇인지 재조명한다.
