통영항에서 1시간 30여분 뱃길을 달리면 만날 수 있는 섬, 비진도.
섬의 형상이 마치 거대한 구슬 옥자가 푸른 비단폭에 싸인 것처럼 보인다 하여 붙여진 이름...
비진도는 명물은 안섬과 바깥섬을 연결해주는 비진도 산호빛 해변인데 잘록한 여인의 허리를 연상시키는 모양으로 서쪽 해안가에는 금빛 고운 모래가, 동쪽으로는 윤기 나는 몽돌들이 있다.
겨울에 찾은 비진도는 온통 푸른 물결을 이루는데 그것의 정체는 바로 금초라고도 불리는 시금치는 뭍의 시금치보다 달큰한 맛이 더해 비싼 값으로 팔린다는 비진도 시금치~
덕분에 섬사람들의 겨울은 훈훈해진다.
마을 주민이 고작 33명인 섬이다. 그 안에 전교생 4명과 선생님 1분이 생활하는 비진도의 아담한 초등학교를 찾아 그들과 함께 자연을 누려보는 것도 재미난 일.
