장자도는 인위적인 대피항이 아니 천연적인 대피항으로 유명하며 60여년 전까지만 해도 가장 풍요로운 섬으로서 고군산열도를 대표하는 섬이였다.
장자도는 말의 형국을 하고 있으며 바다 건너 선유도의 맥을 이룬 큰 산이 감싸주고 있어 인물이 많이 나온다고 전해진다. 장자할머니 설화가 전해지며, 거무타령, 어름마타령 등의 민요가 전해지는 섬.
