9개의 유인도와 30개의 무인도가 있는 욕지면의 주도 욕지도.
1889년 개척자들이 처음 입도하였을 때 수목이 울창하고 가시덤불과 온갖 약초가 뒤엉킨 골짜기마다 사슴들이 뛰어나녔다 하여 예전에는 녹도라고도 불렀다 한다.
다른 설은 욕지항안에 또 하나의 작은 섬이 거북이 모양으로 목욕하고 있는 것 같다고 하여 욕지라 했다는 설이 있는가 하면 유배지였기 때문에 많은 인물들이 이곳에서 욕된 삶을 살다 갔다 해서 욕지라 일컬었다고도 한다.
최고점은 천황산(392m)이다.
전체적으로 구릉이 발달하여 경지면적이 협소하며 해안가는 절벽과 기암괴석으로 장관을 이룬다.
욕지도는 풍족한 식량 자원이 있는데 돌고메라 불리는 고구마가 널리 알려져 있으며 제주도에서만 난다는 감귤이 욕지도에서도 나고 있다.
감성돔을 비롯한 어종이 풍부하고, 연안에서는 김과 굴 양식이 활발하다.
또한 국내 최초 참치 양식장이 성공적으로 이루어져 욕지도의 이름을 널리 알리고 있다.
