국토의 절반이 호수인 나라 말라위. 이곳에 가난과 질병으로 얼룩진 아프리카의 모든 상흔을 짊어지고 살아가는 아이가 있다. 올 해 열두 살인 마야미코다. 한창 부모의 사랑을 받으며 웃는 법을 배워야 할 나이에, 눈물부터 배워야 했던 아이. 특별기획 시리즈는 열두 살 가장 마야미코를 소개한다. 검은 대륙에서 태어났다는 이유로, 가진 것보다 못 가진 것이 훨씬 많은 아이들의 눈물겨운 현실을 마야미코의 삶을 통해 함께하자.
슬픈 대륙을 닮은 아이, 마야미코를 만나다
아프리카에서 가장 아름다운 나라 중 하나로 꼽히는 말라위. 하지만 아름다운 절경과 달리 아이들의 삶은 그렇지 못 하다. 취재진은 치호자 마을에서 슬픈 표정의 한 소년을 만났다. 바로 마야미코(12). 보살핌이 필요한 작은 체구의 마야미코에겐 도리어 보살펴야 할 동생이 셋이나 있다. 에이즈로 부모를 잃고 가장이 됐기 때문! 당나귀를 돌보며 생계를 이어갔지만 지금은 다리를 다쳐 이마저도 어렵다. 일을 못 하게 된 후, 마야미코네의 아침식사는 물 한 컵이 전부. “부족해요. 생필품이 필요해요.” 병원조차 없는 마을에서 다리를 치료할 방법은 교회에서의 주술뿐이지만 이것도 치료비가 없어 포기했다. 간혹 옆집에서 옥수수를 얻어도 마야미코는 동생들을 위해 굶는다. 동생들을 위해 포기한 것은 음식만이 아니다. “동생들을 학교에 보내요. 저도 가고 싶지만 포기했어요.” 드넓은 대륙 위에 부모 없이 남겨진 마야미코와 세 동생! 아이들의 삶은 가난과 질병으로 점철된 아프리카를 그대로 닮아있었다.
마야미코의 아주 평범한, 아주 특별한 소원
말라위에서 매년 에이즈로 사망하는 사람만 무려 7만 명. 그로 인해 발생하는 에이즈 고아만 100만 명에 달한다. 마야미코도 에이즈 고아 중 한 명이다. 집 가까운 곳에 위치한 부모님의 무덤. 그런데 부모님의 무덤 바로 옆에 또 하나의 무덤이 있다. 6개월 전 말라리아로 죽은 막내 동생의 것. “동생을 치료하려 돈을 모았어요. 그리고 병원에 갔지만 동생은 죽어버렸어요.” 자신이 어리고 힘이 없어 동생을 지키지 못 한 것 같다는 열두 살 소년. 그에겐 또 한 가지 걱정이 있다. 셋째 동생이 말라리아에 걸린 것이다. “동생들을 잘 돌봐서 동생들이 죽지 않는 것이 소원이에요.” 취재진은 구호단체 굿네이버스와 함께 병원을 찾아 마야미코와 동생의 치료를 도왔다. 심하게 곪은 자신의 발보다, 말라리아에 걸린 동생이 더 걱정인 마야미코! “말라위엔 의사가 부족해요. 의사가 돼서 사람들을 돕고 싶어요.” 한창 뛰어놀아야 할 나이에 삶을 걱정해야 하는 마야미코와 아프리카의 수많은 아이들! 슬픈 대륙의 아이들이 웃을 수 있도록 이제 전 세계가 나서야 할 때가 아닐까.
