억압의 상징 교도소, 자유를 노래하다
필리핀에서도 좀처럼 공개된 적 없을 만큼 경계가 삼엄한 맥시멈 교도소를 찾은 제작진! 한 번 들어가면 살아나오기 힘들다는 이곳엔 11000명의 종신형 죄수가 수감돼있다. 음침할 거란 예상과 달리, 교도소는 활기찬 분위기. 교도소 내에 시장이 있는가하면, 재소자들이 재배한 물품들로 매매까지 한다. 하지만 이곳을 특별하게 만든 주인공은 따로 있다. “그랜드코랄은 기쁨입니다.” “코랄은 외로움을 달래줘요.” 재소자들이 너나할 것 없이 사랑하는 ‘그랜드코랄’은 바로 맥시멈 교도소 내의 오케스트라! 밴드와 합창단으로 이뤄진 코랄은 단원 대부분이 음악을 했던 이들이라 수준급의 연주를 자랑한다. TV출연은 물론, 외부로부터 공연요청이 빗발칠 정도! 코랄의 오디션이 있는 날, 지원자들로 오디션장은 발 디딜 틈 없었다. “가족이 저를 TV에서 볼 수 있잖아요.” “출소한다면, 새 인생에 유용한 재능이 될 것 같아요.” 자유롭지 못 한 공간인 교도소에서 그들은 음악을 통해 자유를 노래하고 있다.
단 한 사람을 위한 아주 특별한 공연!
타교도소에 비해 자유롭고 활기찬 분위기의 맥시멈 교도소. 하지만 이곳 재소자들에게도 가족과의 이별은 버티기 힘든 형벌이다. 지난 6월 이곳에 온 오딕. 줄곧 음악을 해온 그는 이전 교도소에서 3년 간 음악을 놓아야만 했다. 이곳에 온 후 다시 음악을 찾았지만, 노래할 수 있는 즐거움도 가족들을 향한 그의 미안함을 잊게 하기엔 역부족이었다. 며 칠 후로 다가온 둘 째 딸의 생일, 오딕은 생각 끝에 가족을 교도소로 초대했다. 딸을 위해 아주 특별한 생일선물을 준비했기 때문이다. 바로 오딕의 딸 헤이즐만을 위한 코럴 오케스트라의 공연! “우리 동료들이 널 위해 준비한 거야. 아빠가 비록 수감자지만, 너를 위해 준비한 선물이야. 생일 축하한다.” 그 어느 때보다 열정적으로 공연에 임하는 단원들. “행복해요. 저를 위해 노래할 것이란 생각은 하지 못 했어요. 감사합니다.” 눈물이 그렁한 눈으로 행복에 겨워하는 헤이즐과 오딕의 가족들. 그들을 위한 사랑의 연주가 맥시멈 교도소를 가득 채웠다.
