마녀라는 이유로 쫓겨난 슬픈 아이들
콩고 강이 흐르는 아프리카 대륙의 중심부에 위치한 콩고민주공화국. 두 달 전, 제작진이
찾아간 수도 킨샤사에서는 퇴마 의식이 한창이었다. 마녀로 지목받는 것에는 기준이 없었
다. 쌍둥이, 몸이 불편하거나 눈이 유독 크거나 고집이 센 아이 등 외모와 성격이 특이하면
곧 마녀로 지목됐다. 하지만 찌르고 때리는 참혹한 퇴마의식을 견뎠다고 해서 끝난 것은
아니다. 마녀 사냥을 당하고 집에서 쫓겨난 아이들은 킨샤사에만 무려 2만 명에 달한다! 킨
샤사 외곽에 살고 있는 나오미 역시 예외는 아니었다. 외삼촌이 아프다는 이유로 다니던
교회에서 마녀로 지목된 것! 집안 청소부터 밭일에 이르기까지 모든 집안일을 도맡아하던
나오미는 끔찍한 퇴마의식 앞에 눈물을 흘렸다.
“나는 학교에 가고 싶어요.”
두 달 후, 제작진은 나오미를 다시 찾아갔다. 하지만 나오미는 외삼촌 집을 나온 상태였
다. 마녀사냥을 당한 아이들이 자주 모인다는 기찻길 주변을 돌아다니며 나오미를 찾아 나
선 W제작진! 겨우 나오미가 채소를 팔러 다니던 시장에서 다시 만날 수 있었다! “집에 가고
싶지 않아요, 학교에 가고 싶어요.” 제작진은 나오미와 함께 보호소로 향했다. “내게 더
러운 물을 끼얹었죠.” 12년 전 마녀사냥을 당했던 베네딕트는 네 살 때 집에서 쫓겨났다.
비슷한 처지의 아이들이 모여 있는 보호소에서 학교에 갈 준비하는 나오미! 보호소 원장님
과 함께 산 새 공책에 나오미는 자신의 이름을 적어가기 시작했다. 환하게 웃으며 좋아하
는 나오미. 드디어 나오미가 학교에 가는 날! 나오미의 학교로 향하는 발걸음은 가볍기만
했다.
