억 3천의 신(神)과 11억의 사람들이 공존하는 거대한 땅이 있다. 그리고 신성한 강이 이 땅을 휘감아 흐른다. 축제의 나라라 불리는 인도! 인도인들이 여신이라 부르며 숭배하는 갠지스 강에 10만 명이 넘는 인파가 모여들었다. “갠지스 강가 여신 만세! 강가 여신 만세!” 가득 모인 인파에 몸을 제대로 움직일 수가 없을 정도인데 사람들의 표정은 하나같이 행복하기만 하다. 인생 가장 성스럽고 행복한 순간을 맞았다고 말하는 이들은 무엇을 위해 갠지스 강으로 모인 것일까?
42일간의 성스러운 축제, 쿰부멜라!
수도 델리에서 북쪽으로 5시간을 달려 도착한 곳, 하리드와르. ‘신의 문’이라는 뜻을 가진 하리드와르는 인도인들에게는 특별한 의미를 가진 성지다. 매년 1월이면 이곳의 기차역은 쿰부멜라 축제에 참여하기 위해 인도 전역에서 몰려온 사람들로 북새통을 이룬다. 어떤 소망을 이루기 위해 이들은 하리드와르에 모인 것일까?
인구의 80%가 힌두교인 인도인들에게 힌두교 최대 축제인 ‘쿰부멜라’는 그 무엇보다도 소중한 축제다. 인도인들은 쿰부멜라 시기에 신성한 강 갠지스에서 목욕을 하면 평생 지은 죄업을 씻고 지금보다 나은 내세를 기약할 수 있다고 믿는다. 무려 42일간이나 지속되는 성스러운 축제에서 만난 이들은 하나같이 강의 성스러움에 대해 말한다. “갠지스 강가는 우리들의 어머니와도 같아요. 여기서 씻으면 질병뿐만 아니라 죄도 사라지죠.” 이방인의 눈에는 탁하고 불결해 보이기만 하는 강물이, 이들에게는 생명수와도 같다.
인도인들의 삶과 죽음을 안고 흐르는 갠지스 강
강을 붉게 물들이던 해가 저물고 어둠이 서서히 내려앉자, 강물은 더 아름다운 빛을 내뿜기 시작했다. 거대한 빛이 일렁이는 황홀한 갠지스 강의 모습에 제작진조차 눈을 땔 수 없었다. 5천 년의 역사를 자랑하는 불의 의식, 아르띠다! 성직자들의 기도가 끝나면 순례자들은 갠다라는 노란 꽃에 촛불을 얹은 ‘디아’를 강물에 띄우며 찬미를 드린다. “강은 우리의 모든 것이에요. 살아 있을 때도, 죽어서도 강가에 있어야 하니까요.” 갠지스에서 삶과 죽음을 맞이하는 힌두교도의 생. 태어나선 갠지스 강에서 세례를 받고, 죽어서는 갠지스 강에 뿌려지는 것으로 이들은 윤회의 고통에서 벗어난다고 믿는다. 추운 날씨도 아랑곳 하지 않고 옷을 훌렁 벗고 강물로 뛰어드는 사람들! 10만 순례자의 간절한 기원과 행복의 목소리에 새벽이 동트고 있었다.
모든 인도인들이 자신들 삶의 전부라 말하는 갠지스. 이 신비한 강은 대체 어디서부터 시작되어 모든 인도인들의 꿈과 소망을 싣고 흐르는 것일까? 쿰부멜라 시기가 되면 강의 발원지를 찾는 순례자들의 행렬 또한 끊이지 않는다. 신들의 땅이라 불리는 히말라야 산맥. 수만 년 동안 히말라야를 덮고 있던 빙하가 녹아 만들어진 강이 바로 갠지스다. 11억의 인도인들이 제각기 믿는 세상 모든 신과 사상을 하나로 묶고 2,500km를 도도히 흐르는 갠지스 강! 신성한 물을 따라 흐르는 축제의 현장
