2009년 9월 30일, 리히터 규모 7.6의 강진이 평화롭던 섬 수마트라를 뒤흔들었다. 순식간에 시청, 병원, 쇼핑센터 등의 수많은 건물이 무너져 내리고 곳곳에서는 화재와 폭발 그리고 정전까지 잇따랐다. 통곡과 눈물로 가득 찼던 아비규환의 현장, 지진이 휩쓸고 간지 100여 일 後, 그들은 어떻게 지내고 있을까?
낯선 땅으로의 생애 첫 봉사활동. 긴장 반 걱정 반으로 수마트라 섬에 발을 디딘 김남길이 먼저 찾은 곳은 파당시의 한 재래시장이었다. 열대과일이 가득한 활기찬 시장 분위기에 안도의 한숨을 내쉬었지만, 그것도 잠시. 시장 바로 옆에는 무너져 내릴 듯 한 건물들이 상인들의 목숨을 시시각각 위협하고 있었다.
“지진이 어떤 것인지 잘 와 닿지 않지만 너무 늦게 온건 아닌지
또 무엇을 할 수 있을지 걱정이 됩니다.”
학교 역시 지진을 피해갈 순 없었다. 서 수마트라 지역의 204개 학교가 붕괴됐고, 약 9만 명의 아이들이 정규교육을 받을 수 없게 됐다. 임시 초등학교를 찾은 김남길은 비행기에서 연습했던 인도네시아 어로 아이들에게 인사를 건넸다. 임시로 세워진 학교 건물의 한 쪽 벽에선 아이들이 그림을 그리며 지진의 상처를 치유하고 있었다. ‘지진’이라는 단어만 나와도 금세 울음을 터뜨리는 아이들. 아이들의 여린 마음 속 상처를 마주한 김남길은 지진이 학교 건물뿐만이 아니라 아이들의 웃음까지도 앗아간 것 같아 마음 아파했다.
생애 첫 집짓기에 도전한 김남길!
10살, 8살, 6살 귀여운 자매들이 사는 미라네를 찾은 김남길. 집의 2/3가 무너져 내린데다가 지진으로 인한 충격 때문에 큰 딸은 극심한 대인기피와 우울증까지 앓고 있었다. 우기에 비라도 피할 수 있었으면 좋겠다는 가족들의 소박한 꿈을 위해 김남길은 팔을 걷어붙이고 미라네 가족을 위한 보금자리를 만들기 시작했다. 장비도 부족해 도끼로 못을 박아야 하는 열악한 상황 속에서 무너진 담 위에 벽을 세우며 김남길은 최선을 다했다. 진심은 통하는 걸까? 피하기만 했던 미라가 김남길에게 야자열매를 건넸다. 백 마디 말보다 더 강한 진심을 나누는 순간 둘 사이에는 미소가 번졌다. 어느덧 뚫려있던 천장엔 지붕이 얹혀졌다. 절망뿐이던 미라네 집에 기적이 일어나는 순간, 가족들과 김남길은 환하게 웃었다.
“제가 원래 땀을 잘 안 흘리는데 지금 옷이 다 젖었어요.
여기에 와서 1년치 땀을 다 흘리는 것 같아요. 그래도 기분은 좋네요.”
마지막 날까지 구호물품과 가재도구, 학교를 잃은 아이들에겐 축구공을 선물한 김남길. 지진으로 모든 것이 무너져 내렸지만, 매 순간 최선을 다하는 사람들의 모습에 김남길은 오히려 그들 덕분에 자신이 더 행복해졌다며 고마워했다. 지진의 상처를 서로 보듬어 준 그들의 따스한 이야기
