안데스 산맥의 한가운데, 볼리비아의 수도 라파스에서 남쪽을 향해 200km 쯤 달리다보면 믿을 수 없는 광경이 눈앞에 펼쳐진다. 눈처럼 새하얗게 빛나는 광활한 순백의 평원! 바로 세계 최대의 소금사막 ‘우유니’다. 천국과도 같은 경이로운 풍광을 자랑하는 우유니 소금사막. 최근 2차 전지 원료인 리튬의 매장지로 알려지면서 새롭게 주목받기 시작한 그곳을 찾아갔다.
태양과 소금이 만들어낸 천혜의 절경
약 1억 년 전 태평양의 일부였던 우유니 지역. 지각변동으로 바다가 솟아오른 후 강렬한 태양과 건조한 기후에 물이 모두 증발하고 소금만 남았다. 그 면적은 약 1만 2천㎢로 우리나라의 전라남도와 맞먹는 수준. 100억 톤에 가까운 소금이 저장되어 있는 이곳에서는 모든 것이 소금으로 만들어지고 모든 삶이 소금을 중심으로 이루어진다. 우유니 사막 한가운데 자리한 소금호텔. 딱딱한 소금을 벽돌처럼 쌓아 만든 건물로, 가구들까지도 전부 소금으로 만들었다. 구조물이 녹을까봐 실내에서는 일체 물을 사용할 수 없다고 한다. 순백의 평야가 이들에게 ‘소금’이라는 소중한 선물만 안겨준 것은 아니다. 이곳의 주민들은 대체로 소금채취를 통해 생계를 잇는데, 새하얀 소금이 강한 햇빛을 반사해 피부가 상하고, 시력에 손상을 입기도 한다고. 특히 손으로 일일히 소금을 캐던 시절에는 유난히 맹인들이 많았다고 주민들은 전했다.
소금밭에 숨겨진 또 하나의 보물, 리튬
