일부다처제를 폐지하면 매춘부가 늘어난다?!
인구의 20%가 무슬림인 말라위. 경제력이 없는 여성의 사회구제차원에서 일부다처제를 허용하는 이슬람의 관행이 뿌리박혀 있는 나라다. 말라위 무슬림 협회는 “여성 인구가 남성보다 4%정도 많은 말라위에서 일부다처를 폐지하게 되면, 결혼을 하지 못하는 여성들은 매춘부로 전락할 수밖에 없다”고 주장하고 있다. 인구의 절반 이상이 하루 1달러 이하로 살아가는 가난한 나라, 말라위에서 여성을 보호하는 방법은 결혼이라는 울타리라는 것이다.
