미국 북서부의 아름다운 도시 시애틀. 하지만 시애틀의 화려함 속에도 그늘진 곳이 있다. 가난과 마약에 찌들어 시애틀 뒷골목을 배회하는 사람들. 그런데, 시애틀 노숙자들에겐 아주 특별한 친구가 있다. 노숙자들을 찾아와 속옷부터 손수 만든 담요까지 나눠주는 메간 존슨(19)이 바로 그 주인공. 선천적 장애를 안고 생후 7개월에 입양된 한국인에서 미국을 울린 희망의 주인공이 되기까지! 그녀의 가슴 뜨거운 감동스토리가 공개된다.
다르게 자라는 것이, 틀리게 자라는 것은 아니다!
메간이 노숙자의 처참한 현실을 안 것은 9년 전. “충격이었어요. 그들의 눈은 ‘제발 도와주세요’ 말했어요.” 영상을 본 메간은 그들을 도울 방법을 생각했고 부모와 상의 끝에 담요를 만들어 주기로 했다. 주위에선 열 살 소녀의 일회적 행동이라 여겼지만, 메간의 담요 나눠주기는 올 해로 9년 째 계속 되고 있다. 사회에서 다르다고 구분 받는 이들을 위해 나눔을 행하는 그녀. 이처럼 메간이 ‘다르게 자란’ 이들을 위해 베푸는 것은 그들의 어려움을 알기 때문. 생후 7개월에 입양된 그녀는 선천적으로 구개열과 안면 비대칭 질환을 앓았다. 지금까지 받은 수술만 무려 27번! “저도 사람이고 여자예요. 그저 다르게 생겼을 뿐이죠.” 장애와 입양을 행복으로 승화시킨 그녀는 그 값진 마음을 다른 이들과 함께 나누고 있다.
메건의 아름다운 미션!
“메간을 본 순간 우리는 아이를 사랑하게 됐어요.” 메간의 부모는 그녀의 사진을 본 즉시 입양을 결정했다. 메간에게 장애가 있음을 알았지만 개의치 않았다. 부모의 품에서 아낌없는 사랑을 받고 자란 그녀. 하지만 초등학교 입학 후 그녀는 자신이 남들과 다르다는 것을 알았다. “아이들이 내가 너처럼 생겼으면 죽었을 거라고 했어요.” 아이들의 놀림에 그녀는 좌절했지만 부모의 노력과 장애를 극복하려는 의지는 그녀를 변화시켰다. 아픔을 딛고 일어선 뒤 그녀는 나누는 삶을 위해 더욱 노력했다. 5년 전 시작한 ‘메건의 사명’이 바로 그것! 이 프로젝트는 시애틀 노숙자들에게 담요와 생필품을 나눠주거나, 어린이 병원의 환자들을 돌보는 등의 활동을 하는 것이다. ‘메간의 사명’으로 그녀는 미국 최고 권위의 자원봉사자 상인 ‘미국의 젊은 봉사자 상’까지 수상했다. 작은 마음이 누군가의 삶에 큰 변화를 줄 수 있다는 그녀는 오늘도 시애틀의 ‘다르게 자란 이’들을 찾아 거리를 나선다.
간호사가 되어 아픈 이들을 돌보고, 앞으로도 지금 나누는 모든 것들을 다른 이들과 함께 하고 싶은 것이 바람이라는 자랑스러운 한인 소녀 메간. 미국에서 펼쳐지는 그녀의 아름다운 나눔을 함께하자!

"When we saw Megan, we loved her." Megan's parents decided to adopt her immediately after seeing her picture. I knew Megan had a disability, but I did not care. She grew up with a generous love in the arms of her parents. But after she entered elementary school, she knew she was different from others. "The children said that I would have died if I looked like you." She was frustrated with the children's teasing, but her willingness to overcome her efforts and obstacles changed her. After getting over her pain, she tried harder for her life to share. That's the mission of Megan that started five years ago! The project is to distribute blankets and necessities to Seattle homeless people, and to take care of patients in children's hospitals. With Megan 's mission, she won the "America' s Young Volunteer Award", the highest authority volunteer in the United States. A small mind can make a big difference in someone's life, and today she goes out to find Seattle's "differently grown people."
