필리핀에는 특별한 학교가 있다. 바로 바퀴달린 손수레 학교 ‘카리톤’! 배움의 꿈을 가진 아이들이 있는 곳이라면 어디든 찾아가는 열린 교실 카리톤을 공개한다.
교육 사각지대를 찾아온 희망의 빛
필리핀의 최대 공동묘지인 ‘북 마닐라’묘원. 이 어둡고 습한 죽음의 공간을 삶의 터전삼아 살아가는 이들이 있다. 쓰레기를 모아 힘겨운 생활을 이어가는 마닐라의 빈민들. 이들에게 배움의 기회는 드물고, 대부분의 아이들은 일찍부터 폭력과 범죄에 빠져든다. 그러나 이곳에 카리톤 수레학교가 찾아오면서부터 이야기가 달라졌다. “예전에 저는 깡패였어요. 매일 사고를 치고, 병을 던지며 싸웠죠” “초등학교 2학년 때부터 (깡패)조직멤버였어요. 물건도 훔치고 본드도 하고...” 란돌프(17)와 마이클(18)은 수레학교 출신이다. 무엇이 옳고 그른지조차 몰랐던 이들은 이곳 카리톤 학교에서 글을 배우면서 전혀 다른 사람이 됐다. 수레학교에서 봉사활동을 시작하고, 아이들까지 가르치는 선생님이 된 것이다.
수레를 끌고 나타난 작은 영웅, 에이프런
카리톤 수레학교가 걸음을 시작한지는 올해로 10년째. 수레학교를 만난 후 이곳 빈민들에게는 어떤 변화가 생겼을까? “처음으로 자신감을 갖게 됐어요” “아이들이 카리톤에서 정말 많은 것을 배웁니다” 이 기발하고 가슴 따뜻한 교실을 처음 연 사람은 열혈청년 에이프런 페날로리다(22). 청년봉사단체 ‘다이내믹 틴 컴퍼니’를 이끄는 그는 이곳 사람들에게는 멘토와 같은 존재다. “에이프런이 제게 무엇이 좋고 나쁜 것인지 알려줬어요” “다이내믹 틴을 못 만났다면 저는 아마 이미 감옥에 있거나 마약을 하거나 병이 들었을 겁니다” 자신의 어린 시절, 가난 때문에 배움에서 멀어졌던 경험을 거울삼아 이 일을 시작한 에이프런은 작년 미국 CNN에서 ‘올해의 영웅’으로까지 선정됐다. 에이프런과 그 친구들은, 자신들의 이런 활동으로 인해 세상이 밝게 변화할 것이라고 굳게 믿고 있다.
전체 인구의 25%가 빈민층인 필리핀. 그중 수도 마닐라는 50%가 빈민층일 정도로 빈곤문제가 심각하다. 그나마 찾아들었던 공동묘지에서마저 철거 위협에 시달리고 있는 사람들에게, 카리톤 수레학교는 마지막 남은 희망의 등불이다. 더는 물러설 곳 없는 밑바닥 인생, 힘겨운 삶을 짊어지고서도 배움의 기쁨에 미소짓는 묘지빈민들의 작지만 희망찬 변화! 그 눈물겨운 감동스토리

The poor people of Manila who collect garbage and continue their struggling life. Opportunities for learning are rare, and most children fall into violence and crime early on. However, the story has changed since the Caritone Surf School came here. "I used to be a gangster. Everyday I had an accident, I threw a bottle and fought. "" I've been a (gangsters) organization member since my second grade in elementary school. Randolph (17) and Michael (18) are from wagon schools. Those who did not even know what was right and wrong became completely different as they learned to write at the Caritone School here. He started volunteering at the wagon school and became a teacher to teach children.
The little hero, the apron,
It's been 10 years since the Caritone Surge began. What kind of changes have happened to the poor people after meeting the wagon schools? "I got confidence for the first time." "The kids really learn a lot from Caritone." The first person to open this quirky, hearty classroom is the hot young man Apron Fernalidah (22). He is a mentor to the people who lead the youth service group 'Dynamic Teen Company'. "The apron told me what was good and bad." "If you have not met Dynamic Teen, I'm probably already in jail, drugged or ill." In his childhood, poverty, The apron that was launched last year was named as 'The Hero of the Year' by CNN in the US. Apron and his friends are firmly convinced that their activities will change the world brightly.
