덩리쥔의 조국인 대만. 올해는 특히 그녀의 사망 15주기를 맞아 박물관 개장과 기념우표 발매 등 대대적인 추모행사가 벌어졌다. 아직도 그녀를 열렬히 사랑하는 수많은 팬들이 가져온 각양각색의 선물들. 천만마리의 학과 화려한 꽃다발, 사진들로 그녀의 묘소는 넘쳐났다. 이미 우리에게도 익숙한 영화 ‘첨밀밀’의 주제곡 ‘첨밀밀’을 비롯해 수많은 히트곡을 남긴 덩리쥔. 그녀의 존재가 중화권에서 갖는 의미는 단순히 아름다운 사랑노래를 넘어선다. 1970년 전후 이념대립으로 긴장 상태에 있던 중국과 대만을 하나로 묶고, 위기에 놓인 대만경제를 되살리는데 커다란 기여를 했던 것. 70년대 당시 공산주의 중국에서 그녀의 노래는 사상적인 이유로 금지되었다. “그래도 사람들은 온갖 방법을 동원해 그녀의 노래를 들었어요” ‘낮에는 등소평, 밤에는 덩리쥔이 지배한다’는 말이 생길 정도로 그녀의 노래는 중국대륙을 뒤흔들었고 1982년, 중국의 어느 공군 조종사는 공산당을 포기하고 위험을 무릅쓴 채 대만으로 향했다. 그는 귀순 동기를 ‘덩리쥔을 만나기 위해서’라고 밝혔다.
사망 15주년, 아직도 계속되는 ‘첨밀밀’
12살에 데뷔해 단번에 대만과 중국을 휩쓸고, 일본과 미국까지 평정했던 덩리쥔. 41세라는 젊은 나이에 천식으로 갑작스레 사망한 그녀의 장례식은 국장(國葬)급으로 치루어졌다. 중화민국 역사상 가수의 죽음에 대해 이를 국가적인 행사로 다룬 사례는 이전에도, 이후에도 결코 없었던 일. 덩리쥔이 대만과 중국사회에 가지는 의미는 그만큼 크고 깊다.
