담요의 민족, 바소토족! 그들의 월동 준비
국경에서 차로 13시간 넘게 달려 겨우 도착한 깊은 산속. 하나같이 담요를 두르고 있는 사람들을 만날 수 있었다. 겨울에는 추위를 막아주는 보온용으로, 여름에는 비를 막아주는 우비로 사용되는 화려한 문양의 담요. 산악지대에서 살아가는 바소토족의 상징이다. 목축과 소규모 농업에 의지해 반농반목 생활을 하는 바소토족. 영하 18도까지 기온이 떨어지는 혹독한 겨울을 앞둔 그들은 월동 준비로 분주한 나날을 보내고 있었다.
왕복 하루, 레소토판 차마고도의 힘겨운 여정
월동 준비 중 최대의 난관은, 농작물이나 양모를 팔러 가는 일. 산꼭대기에서 시내까지 가는 길은 왕복으로 꼬박 하루가 걸릴 만큼 멀고도 험하다. 수백 년 전부터 바소토족이 당나귀에 목화나 양가죽 등을 싣고 며칠을 내려와 생필품을 바꿔 돌아가던 교역로인 셈이다. 겹겹이 주름진 산속에 굽이굽이 펼쳐진 구절양장의 길은 차마고도에 비견될 정도. 세살 된 딸을 둔 파울로 씨(25세)도 그 길에 나섰다. 인근 남아공에서 광산 노동자로 일하며 생계를 책임져 왔지만 최근 그 일마저 줄어들어 실업자 신세가 된 파울로 씨. 얼마 되지 않은 농작물을 팔아 추운 겨울을 준비하기로 했다.
