죽음보다 잔인한 고문 ‘돌팔매형’

법은 만인에게 평등하다? 억압 받는 이란 여성의 인권
지난 20일, W취재진은 사키네의 변호사 모스타파에이를 아시아 언론에서는 최초로 만났다. “사키네에게 간통죄 혐의는 없습니다.” 그녀의 변호를 맡은 대가는 혹독했다. 타국으로의 망명은 물론, 가족까지 인질로 잡혀야 했던 것. 위험을 무릅쓰고 그가 밝히려 했던 건 사키네를 비롯한 이란 여성들이 처한 잔인한 현실이었다. 이란에서는 지난 4년 새, 7명이 돌팔매로 사형 당했고 지금도 14명의 사형수가 돌팔매형을 기다리고 있다. 그 중 여성은 11명. 이슬람 형법인 ‘샤리아법’은 여성에게 더 엄격하다. 돌팔매형에서도 예외는 아니다. 남성은 허리까지 묻는 것에 반해, 여성은 가슴까지 묻는 것. 땅 속에서 빠져나오면 형벌을 정지한다는 규정이 있지만 허리까지 묻힌 여성은 사실상 나오기가 불가능하다. 이란여성들은 사키네 사건에 대해 어떻게 생각할까? 취재진은 폐쇄적인 사회 속에 살아가는 이들의 생생한 이야기를 듣던 중, 모두가 공통되게 제기하는 의혹을 발견했다. “간음죄가 확정되려면 4명의 증인이 필요해요. 증인이 없다면 당사자가 4번 죄를 인정해야 하죠. 하지만 사키네 사건은 그렇지 못 하죠.” 세계의 움직임으로 그녀의 운명이 뒤바뀌고 있다. 하지만, 그녀는 아직도 위험에 처해있다.
