아프리카 중부에 위치한 말라위는 국민의 절반 이상이 1달러 미만으로 하루를 사는 세계 최빈국 중 하나다. 2001년 에이즈 대란과 2005년 극심한 가뭄으로 약 150만의 고아가 발생했고, 현재 말라위의 5세 이하 아이들은 기아로 인해 절반이 발육장애, 1/3이 체중미달인 상태! 도무지 벗어날 수 없을 것 같은 지독한 가난과 가뭄, 질병으로 아이들이 신음하는 그 곳을, 배우 이승연이 찾아갔다.
패셔니스타 이승연, 말라위 천사들의 엄마가 되다
한 아이의 엄마가 되어 우리 곁으로 돌아온 이승연, 그녀는 이번 말라위 방문을 위해 그동안의 도시적인 이미지를 과감히 버리고 화장기 없는 얼굴과 수수한 옷차림을 택했다. 질병과 기아로 해마다 수십만 명의 아이들이 죽어가는 말라위의 고아원을 찾은 그녀는, 가뭄으로 물조차 맘껏 마시지 못하는 열악한 환경에서 고통받는 아이들을 보면서 뜨거운 눈물을 흘렸다. "엄마의 마음으로 보게 되니까 가슴이 더 메이고 아프네요..." 기아로 고통 받는 말라위 어린이들을 위해 그녀는 팔을 걷어붙였다. 옥수수와 콩을 재료로 한 옥수수죽 형태의 식량인 바이타밀을 만들어 아이들에게 제공하는 공장이 있지만 지원할 수 있는 아동 수에 제한이 있어, 모든 아이들이 배불리 먹지 못 하는 사실이 가슴 아팠던 그녀! 그녀는 바이타밀을 손수 만들어 아이들에게 먹여주었다. 일주일의 짧은 시간, 이승연은 한명이라도 더 먹이고 안아주기 위해 고군분투한 그녀! 마지막 날 흙바닥에서 잠든 아이들 모두에게 손수 준비해간 담요를 한 장씩 덮어주던 그녀의 모습은 마치 아이들의 진짜 엄마를 보는 듯 했다.
이승연의 이번 말라위 방문의 성과는 고아원 봉사활동 뿐만이 아니다. 말라위 부통령 조이스 반다를 만나 말라위와 한국에 대한 깊은 이야기를 나누고 특별한 추억도 남겼다. 또한 농업학교를 설립해 말라위 가족들을 자립으로 이끌어가는 ‘말라위의 아버지’ 나폴리온 좀베씨와의 만남은 그녀에게 이루 말할 수 없는 커다란 감동을 선사했다고 하는데.. 과연 그가 전해준 희망의 메시지는 무엇이었을까? 배우 이승연이 지구 반대편의 말라위에서 담아온 특별한 감동 스토리
