오늘날 광범위한 경제적 ‧ 사회적 관심이 지속가능한 화석 연료의 사용에 집중되고 있다. 하지만 현재 세계의 무역과 문화 시설은 석탄, 석유, 천연 가스에 기반하고 있다. 인구는 계속 늘어나고 있으며, 화석 연료 요구량도 늘어나고 있다. 또한 국가가 발전함에 따라 더 많은 사람들이 많은 에너지를 필요로 하는 lifestyle과 생활 질의 향상을 원하고 있다.
화석 연료의 미래에 관한 두 가지 다른 관점이 있다.
한 가지 관점은 세계 곳곳에 우리의 필요에 부응하는 충분한 석탄 매장량이 존재하고 있다는 근거하에 몇 백년간은 걱정할 필요가 없다는 것이다.
나머지 관점은 화석 연료의 연소로 이산화탄소의 발생량이 증가됨에 따라 기후 변화도 심화될 것이며, 화석 연료의 사용 억제를 통해 온실 기체 배출을 최소화하기 원하는 입장이다.
다음은 에너지원을 좀 더 효율적으로 사용하는 방법들이다.
* 석탄에서 천연 가스로의 전환(천연 가스의 사용은 상대적으로 효율성이 높으며, 적은 양의 이산화탄소를 배출한다.)
* 가정과 다른 건물들의 전통적인 석탄 석유 연소용 용광로를 천연가스용으로 교체한다.
* 건물의 단열재를 향상시킨다. (이를 통해 냉난방 기구의 사용을 줄일 수 있다.)
* 산업 과정에서 쓰레기 줄이기 (한 가지 예로 미네소타 광산과 제조회사에서는 공정 과정을 고려하여 기계 성능을 개선시키고, 마그네틱 비디오테이프 생산에 있어 용매를 재활용하는 방법을 통해 산업 폐기물을 줄였다.)
* 백열등 대신 1/4의 에너지로 같은 밝기의 빛을 내도록 설계된 소형 형광등으로 교체한다.

Recent efforts to minimize global warming
Today, widespread economic and social concerns are focused on the use of sustainable fossil fuels. But the world's trade and cultural facilities are now based on coal, oil and natural gas. The population is growing, and the demand for fossil fuels is also increasing. And as the country develops, more and more people are looking to improve their lifestyle and quality of life, which requires a lot of energy.
There are two different views on the future of fossil fuels.
One aspect is that we do not have to worry about hundreds of years on the basis that there are enough coal reserves around the world to meet our needs.
The rest of the viewpoint is that as the amount of carbon dioxide generated increases due to the combustion of fossil fuels, climate change will intensify and the emission of greenhouse gases should be minimized through restraining the use of fossil fuels.
The following are ways to use energy sources more efficiently.
* Conversion from coal to natural gas (the use of natural gas is relatively efficient and produces a small amount of carbon dioxide).
* Replace traditional coal-fired furnaces for homes and other buildings with natural gas.
* Improve the insulation of the building. (This can reduce the use of heating and air conditioning equipment.)
* Reduce waste in industrial processes (for example, Minnesota mines and manufacturing companies have reduced industrial waste by improving machine performance with process considerations and recycling solvents in the production of magnetic videotapes).
* Instead of incandescent lamps, replace them with compact fluorescent lamps that are designed to emit light of the same brightness at 1/4 energy.
