고등학교 때 특별활동으로 처음 육상을 시작해 고교 졸업 때까지 중장거리 선수로 활동한 이봉주.
여러 우여곡절 끝에 세 번이나 고등학교를 전학, 1년 늦게 졸업하여 서울시청 팀에 입단하면서 본격적으로 마라톤 인생을 시작했고, 그 후 코오롱을 거쳐 삼성전자에서 활동했다.
하프마라톤 한국 최고기록과 마라톤 풀코스 한국최고기록을 모두 보유하고 있는 이봉주에게 2009년 정부는 체육인으로 최고의 영예인 청룡장을 수여했다.
은퇴 후 그는 한국의 육상 발전을 위해 재단설립을 준비하면서 지도자와 스포츠 행정가의 꿈을 키우고 있는 이봉주.
