슬픈 축복의 땅, 인도네시아 워노졸로
풍부한 석유의 나라 인도네시아. 그 중에서도 유독 석유가 많아 ‘축복의 땅’이라 불리는 곳이 있다. 바로 자그마치 백여 개의 유정이 있는 워노졸로! 하지만 축복의 땅이라는 말과 달리 이곳 사람들의 삶은 행복하지 않다. 석유가 샘솟는 땅에 살면서도 눈물 흘리는 사람들. 대체 그들에겐 무슨 일이 있는 것일까. 검은 황금 석유를 만질 수는 있지만 가질 수는 없는 그들의 눈물겨운 삶이 W에서 공개된다!
워너졸로, 마지막 남은 재래식 석유 노동자들
인도네시아 자바섬 동부의 작은 산악 마을 워노졸로. 마을 깊숙이 들어가던 제작진은 유전지대에서 볼 수 있는 탑 모양의 시설들을 볼 수 있었다. 탑 앞에 모여 있는 사람들. 대체 무슨 일일까. 사람들이 둘러싸고 있는 나무로 된 낡은 장치 밑에 있는 것은 바로 유정! 네덜란드 식민지시절 개발된 이 유정들은 인도네시아 독립 후 워노졸로 주민들 생계수단이 됐다. 8백 명의 마을 사람들이 이곳에서 일 하지만 자본과 기술이 없어 재래식방법으로 힘겹게 석유를 생산하고 있다. 주민들이 직접 원유가 든 파이프를 끌어올려 땅 속의 원유를 채취하는 것! 원유 속의 지하수와 불순물을 걸러내는 방법 역시 재래식이다. 기름이 물에 뜨는 성질을 이용, 지하수와 불순물 위로 뜬 원유를 손으로 일일이 떠낸다. 하지만 고생스런 수작업을 거쳐 생산된 원유의 가격은 1리터 당 약 3백 원 남짓! 하루 종일 일해도 버는 돈은 하루 최대 5천 원 정도다. “땅이 없어서 농사를 지을 수도 없어요. 우리 같은 사람들이 먹고 살 방법은 이게 전부예요.” 예순이 넘은 나이에도 50gk이 넘는 원유 파이프를 들어올리는 슬라믓 씨. 그는 이 일로 일곱 자식을 키웠다.
빛나지 않는 검은 황금, 워너졸로 석유
허리 펼 틈 없이 일을 하고도 최소한의 생계비용마저 보장받지 못 하는 워너졸로 주민들의 원유 생산! 마을 주민들은 살기 위해 원유를 정제해 경유를 만들어 팔기 시작했다. 리터당 300원인 원유에 비해 경유는 430원 넘게 받을 수 있기 때문! 하지만 경유 생산은 원유보다 훨씬 더 고되다. 35kg짜리의 원유통 두 개를 메고 1시간이 넘는 험한 산길을 하루에도 몇 번씩 오르내려야 하는 것! 또한 원유를 정제할 때의 300도를 넘는 뜨거운 온도 때문에 화상을 입는 일도 다반사다. 위험천만한 노동, 하지만 워너졸로를 찾는 사람들은 늘고있다. 버스기사였던 빠기르(29)씨는 1년 전부터 이 일을 다시 시작했다. “가족을 먹이기엔 버스회사에서 받는 돈이 너무 적었어요. 이 일은 힘들지만 우리 가족들을 먹이기엔 충분해요.” 하지만 마을 유정에서의 원유 생산량이 감소하는데다 자본과 기술을 가진 석유회사들이 워노졸로에서 석유개발을 시작하면서 주민들의 삶은 위태로워졌다. “힘닿는 날까지 이 일을 하고 싶어요.” 온몸에 기름범벅을 한 워너졸로 사람들은 입을 모았다.
워너졸로 사람들의 유일한 생계수단, 석유. 60년 동안 그들의 인생을 책임졌던 석유가 이젠 오히려 그들의 삶을 위협하고 있다. 석유가 행복이자 눈물인 워노졸로 사람들! 그들의 고된 삶
