미국 팜하버의 한 수족관. 이곳에 아주 특별한 인연이 있다. 수족관 안, 돌고래 윈터가 유유히 물살을 가르며 헤엄을 친다. 하지만 한 여자가 수족관에 나타나자 이내 헤엄을 멈추곤 여자에게 다가간다. 기다렸다는 듯 익숙하게 윈터의 등을 쓰다듬는 여자. 윈터와 여자가 함께 헤엄을 치기 무섭게 관객석에서 뜨거운 박수가 터졌다. 열띤 호응을 보내기는 조련사들도 마찬가지. 대체 무슨 일일까. 이 때, 물 밖으로 조금씩 윈터와 여자의 몸이 보이기 시작했다. 꼬리가 없는 돌고래와 한 쪽 다리가 없는 여자! 잠시 후, 의족을 찬 왼쪽 다리로 수조 밖으로 올라온 여자는 더 없이 행복한 모습이었다. 과연 그녀는 누구일까. 한 쪽 다리를 잃었지만 여전히 행복하다는 마야, 그녀의 가슴 뜨거워지는 삶을 살아간다.
“다리가 없는 것이 제 특성이 되는 것은 싫어요.”
팜하버의 이른 아침, 마야는 친구와 함께 조깅을 한다. 도란도란 이야기를 나누며 달리는 익숙한 모습. 하지만 그녀의 운동은 사뭇 다르다. 바로 그녀의 다리 때문이다. 무릎 밑으로 이어진 투박한 철심, 그녀의 왼쪽 다리는 보드라운 피부대신 딱딱한 의족이 대신하고 있다. 서있기도 힘들어 보이는 다리로 조깅, 골프, 테니스에 이르는 갖은 운동을 하는 그녀. “자유로워요. 다신 할 수 없다고 느꼈던 것들을 하고 있잖아요.” 그녀가 왼쪽 다리를 잃은 것은 17년 전, 보스니아 내전의 비극은 그녀에게까지 이어졌다. 당시 보스니아에 살던 그녀는 친구들과 집 마당에서 놀던 중 포탄이 폭발하면서 친구 6명을 잃고 다리까지 잃었다. “뒤로 가려고 했지만 다리가 안 움직였어요.” 병원으로 후송 된 그녀는 마취약이 없어 입 안에 넣은 고무를 악물며 고통을 이겨야했다. 힘겨운 수술 뒤 그녀는 왼쪽 다리를 잃었다.
서로의 꼬리와 다리가 되어주는 마야와 윈터의 특별한 우정
희망은 예기치 않게 찾아왔다. 다리와 맞지 않는 의족으로 고통스러웠던 그녀가 쉬고 싶을 때면 찾는 곳이 있었다. 바로 클리어워터 수족관. 자유로이 헤엄을 치는 돌고래들 중 유독 눈에 띄는 돌고래가 있었다. 꼬리가 잘린 채 힘겹게 헤엄치는 어린 돌고래! 게를 잡는 덫에 꼬리가 잘린 윈터였다. 다리를 잃은 마야와 꼬리를 잃은 윈터. “저와 비슷해 보였어요. 누구도 갖지 못 한 무엇을 우리는 갖고 있어요.” 인공꼬리를 달고도 자유로이 헤엄치는 윈터를 본 그녀는 곧장 윈터의 꼬리를 만든 사람을 찾았다. “윈터가 할 수 있으면 나도 할 수 있을거라 생각했어요. 그녀의 꼬리를 만들어줬으니 나의 다리도 만들어 줄 수 있을 것 같았죠.” 윈터를 만난 뒤 그녀에겐 두 번째 다리가 생겼고 희망찬 인생까지 시작하게 됐다.
“행복은 자기 안에서 찾아야 해요. 저는 항상 행복해요.”
마야의 하루는 쉴 틈이 없다. 한 쪽 다리가 없다고 해서 집에서 종일을 보내는 무기력한 하루를 떠올리는 것은 금물! 그녀와 친구들이 디즈니랜드에 가는 길을 취재진도 따라나섰다. 온전한 다리로도 힘든 놀이공원에서의 시간. 발 디딜 틈 없이 빼곡한 사람들 사이를 의족으로 헤쳐가면서도 그녀의 입가엔 웃음이 떠나질 않는다. “아주 신나는 일이예요. 작년에 왔다면 휠체어를 탔겠지만 이제는 놀이공원을 걸어 다닐 수 있어요.” 장애에 굴하지 않고, 늘 새로운 일상에 뛰어드는 그녀는 웹사이트를 개발하는 회사를 운영하는 사업가이기도 하다. “제 자신을 표현하기 위해서는 탐험이 필요해요. 제 일이 있다는 것은 큰 축복이에요.”
