93세의 할아버지가 카우보이모자를 쓰고 말을 타며 가축을 돌보는 곳! 100세의 할머니가 쉴 새 없이 집안일을 하는 곳! 질병과 고독으로 고통 받는 노후라곤 상상할 수 없는 신비의 도시, 코스타리카 니코야를 W가 찾았다.
장수마을 니코야의 최장수 노인은 과연 누구?
코스타리카에서 가장 큰 반도인 니코야 반도. 전체인구 42,189명 가운데 75세 이상이 1,550명을 차지하는 이곳은 세계적인 장수 마을로 손꼽힐 만큼 건강한 노인들이 가득한 곳이다. “먼데서 왔네. 여기까지 오느라 고생했어요.” 가족들과 함께 전통 요리 타말을 준비하는 판치타 할머니가 취재진을 반가이 맞았다. 판치타 할머니는 무려 1906년에 태어나 올해로 104세가 되는 니코야 최장수 노인이다. 한 세기가 넘는 세월이 흘렀지만 단아한 모습을 잃지 않고 100살이나 차이나는 고손녀와 즐거이 한가로운 오후를 보내고 있는 판치타 할머니. 지금은 기력이 쇠약해져 아들네와 함께 살고 있지만 2년 전까지만 해도 할머니는 혼자 지내면서 요리와 집안일을 혼자 거뜬히 해내실 만큼 건강했다.
93세의 멋쟁이 카우보이!
코스타리카에서도 오지에 속하는 니코야 반도. 산 넘어 산이 계속되는 고립된 지형이 바로 니코야 반도가 품은 장수의 비결 중 하나다. 칼슘과 마그네슘 성분이 많은 니코야의 맑은 물! 험난한 산맥을 따라 흐르는 물을 마을 사람들은 식수와 생활용수로 사용한다. 98세인 아로조 씨 역시 산에서 떠온 물에 사탕수수를 넣어 하루에 꼭 한 잔씩 마시고 있었다. 취재진이 찾은 날, 98세 생일을 맞은 아로조 씨. 가족들이 한 데 모여 축하인사와 선물을 건네는 동안 웃음소리가 끊이지 않았다. “오랫동안 영감이랑 함께 하게 해주셔서 감사드리고 영원히 그를 안 데려갔으면 좋겠어요. 사랑해요.” 86세가 된 아내의 감사 기도에 뽀뽀로 답례를 해주는 아로조 할아버지! 취재진은 가족 간의 끈끈한 유대야말로 아름다운 노년의 비결임을 니코야 반도에서 확인할 수 있었다.
자연과 어우러져 가족과 화목하게 삶을 즐기며 살아가는 것! 모두가 알고 있는 사실이지만, 모두가 실천하진 못하는 장수의 비결이다. 간단하지만 쉽지 않은 어떻게 잘 살아가느냐하는 문제! 한 세기가 넘는 시간동안 유쾌하게 기나긴 생을 즐겨온 니코야 마을 노인들의 비결을 알아본다.
