<다이고로야, 고마워>는 팔, 다리가 없는 장애 원숭이 '다이고로'와 '다이고로'를 키운 일본 오타니 가족의 2년 4개월간의
기록이다. 17cm 키에 몸무게 300g. 장애 원숭이라 어미에게마저 버림받은 채 죽어가던 '다이고로' 였지만, 오타니 가족과의 만남을 통해 '다이고로'는 생명에 대한 의지를 불태운다.
팔, 다리가 없음에도 불구하고 끊임없이 도전하는 '다이고로'. 마침내 '다이고로'는 스스로 구르고 서는 법을 터득하고 걷기에 이른다. 맨살에 굳은살이 박히면서도 끝까지 포기하지 않는 '다이고로'를 보면서 오타니 가족은 생명의 소중함과 '살아있다는 현실만 있다면 무엇이든 할 수 있다'는 것을 깨닫게 된다. 우리는 '다이고로야, 고마워'를 통해 '장애에 대한 우리의 부끄러운 편견', '가족애'와 '살아있다는 것의 아름다움'에 대해 진지하게 토론한다.
다이고로의 강력한 생명력과 끊임없는 도전은 오타니 가족에게 제 2의 삶을 선사했다. 오타니 가족은 '선천성 장애인들의 모임'을 주도하는 한편, '장애인을 위한 여관'을 만들었다. 또한 '다이고로'와 같은 기형 원숭이들이 발생하는 이유를 밝혀내기 위해 지금까지도 카메라를 들고 동분서주하고 있다. 이 가운데 오타니 에이지씨가 찍은 또 하나의 사진을 소개한다. 어미와 함께 절벽 오르는 훈련을 하다 땅에 떨어져 죽은 새끼 원숭이를 썩어서 미이라가 될 때까지 젖을 물리고 털을 골라주는 어미 원숭이의 사랑이 담긴 사진. 이 사진은 독일에서 열린 국제 사진전에서 주목받은 작품이었다. 오타니 부부는 30년간의 운동 끝에 한센병 환자들의 보상문제도 이뤄냈다. 오타니 부부가 소외된 생명들을 위해 일하는 현장을 취재, 그 동안의 활동을 생생한 사진과 함께 소개한다
