◆ 조선의 숙원사업, 왕실 최대 외교 현안을 해결하다
조선과 명나라 사이에 심각한 외교 문제를 일으킨 종계변무. 종계변무는 명나라가 대명회전(명의 행정법전)에 조선 태조 이성계의 혈통을 잘못 기록한 것에서 시작됐다. 용납할 수 없는 모욕에 대해 조선은 수회에 걸쳐 수정할 것을 요청하지만 명은 고칠 태도를 보이지 않는다. 조선 초부터 약 200년간 이어진 종계변무는 역대 왕들의 가장 큰 현안이었다.
종계변무의 임무를 달성하지 못해 죽은 목숨이나 다름없는 역관 홍순언. 그러나 그 앞에 한 여인이 나타난다. 바로 지난날 북경 기생집에서 만났던 여인 류씨!
조선 최대의 외교 문제 종계변무. 역관 홍순언은 이 난관을 어떻게 해결한 것일까?
◆ 조선 최대 참사 임진왜란 - 21만의 명군 파병을 이끌어내다
임진왜란이 시작된지 불과 20일 만에 한양이 함락되고 선조가 피난가자, 명나라는 조선이 일본의 앞잡이가 되어 명을 치려는 계략이라고 의심한다. 당시 명나라에서는 조선에 파병하지 말자는 의견이 많았는데...
임진왜란 때 북경에 있었던 역관 홍순언. 그와 여인 류씨와의 인연이 또 한 번의 기적을 만든다. 바로 21만의 명군 파병과 약 9백만의 은화 지원을 받아낸 것! 이는 수백만의 목숨과 재산을 앗아간 임진왜란을 승리로 이끄는 전환점이 된다.
◆ 수세기를 넘어 현재까지 이어진 인연
역관 홍순언과 여인 류씨와의 인연은 현재까지 이어지고 있다. 류씨의 자손들은 조선으로 귀화해 선조로부터 ‘해주 석씨’를 받아 살고 있다. 한국사傳 제작진이 현재 함양군에 살고 있는 14대손 석덕완씨를 만나봤다.
◆ 한국사傳으로 되살아나는 역관 홍순언!
선조실록, 통문관지, 성호사설, 서포만필, 열하일기, 연려실기술, 동평위공사견문록, 대동기문 등 홍순언에 대한 기록이 실린 책만 30여권이 넘는다. ‘선조실록’이나 조선 외교사를 다룬 ‘통문관지’와 같은 역사서 뿐 아니라 소설집에도 등장하는 역관 홍순언. 수백 년 동안 사람들 입에 오르내린 그의 업적과 파란만장한 일생이 한국사 傳에서 펼쳐진다!
