인류의 욕심은 예기치 못한 곳에서 비극을 낳았다. 무분별한 탄소배출로 인해 지구의 체온은 나날이 높아지고, 땅의 핏줄인 강과 바다는 폐수와 쓰레기로 넘쳐난다. 인류의 탐욕과 몰지각으로 더러워진 지구. 그로 인한 재앙은 낮은 곳의 사람들부터 찾아들고 있었다.
죽은 물의 도시 자카르타
인도네시아의 수도 자카르타 인근을 흐르는 ‘쓰레기강’ 시타럼. 20년 전만 해도 다양한 동식물이 서식하는 생태계의 보고로 손꼽히던 이곳은, 이제 쓰레기 매립지를 방불케 하는 세계 최악의 강으로 변해버렸다. 대도시의 생활쓰레기와 공장폐수, 온갖 배설물이 여과없이 흐르는 죽음의 강. 그곳에서 쓰레기를 주워 살아가는 사람들의 손발은 곰팡이로 하얗게 썩어가고, 인근 바다에서는 등껍질이 바깥으로 휜 기형 거북이들이 발견되고 있다.
길 잃은 야생호랑이의 습격, 인도 순다르반의 참극
인도와 방글라데시의 국경, 갠지스강이 바다와 만나는 순다르반 삼각주에는 야생호랑이와 인간이 강줄기 하나를 사이에 두고 살아간다. 지구온난화로 히말라야의 만년설이 녹으면서 위기가 닥친 순다르반! 해수면 상승으로 서식지를 잠식당한 호랑이들은 강을 건너 마을을 덮치고, 주민들은 잦은 홍수로 망가진 농토를 뒤로 한 채 물고기를 잡기 위해 호랑이 서식지로 들어간다.
