천의 얼굴 인도를 만나다
알록달록 광란의 홀리축제가 시작되자 북인도 거리는 온통 물감 범벅이 되었다.

북인도 지역의 인기 신(神) 크리슈나에 대한 경배로 시작된 홀리축제는 아무런 거리낌 없이 모두가 한 공간에서 즐길 수 있는 인도의 대표적인 축제이다.
뜨거운 여름 한가운데 케랄라가 들썩이기 시작했다.
53년 전통의 최대 보트 경주, 발람칼리가 열리기 때문이다.
참가자들은 경주에 참가하기 위해 35m를 훌쩍 넘는 크기의 뱀 모양의 배를 만들고 경주가 시작되기 전까지 닦고 또 닦는다.
한때 마을사람들이 즐기는 작은 경기에 불과했던 발람칼리는 활기찬 경기 모습에 반한 네루 총리의 지원 아래 인도에서 손꼽히는 세계 최대의 보트 경주로 발전하게 되었다.
발람칼리 당일, 뱀 모양의 배 90척에 나눠 탄 수백 명의 참가자들은 흥겨운 뱃노래를 부르며 멋진 수상 경주를 펼쳤다.

다히한디라 불리는 인간 탑 쌓기는 크리슈나신(神)이 어린 시절 친구들과 하던 놀이에서
비롯되었다고 한다. 인간 탑을 높이 쌓아 공중에 매달린 항아리를 깨뜨리며 즐거워하는 사람들,이처럼 신(神)이 즐기던 놀이는 인도인들에게 최고의 축제로 자리 잡고 있었다.
3천여 개의 카스트
일반적으로 카스트는 브라만, 크샤트리아, 바이샤, 수드라 이렇게 4가지로 대표되지만 실제 인도인들의 삶은 3천 개가 넘는 자띠(Jati)에 의해 구분되고, 타고난 자띠(Jati)가 그들의 직업을 규정짓는다. 인도 사회 자체가 3천여 개의 자띠(Jati)로 거대한 분업 시스템을 이루고 있는 것이다. 자띠(Jati)들은 브라만과 천민과 같은 수직관계의 카스트가 아닌 인도 안에서 서로 다른 직업을 가지고 분업하는 수평관계의 카스트이다. 뭄바이에 있는 집단 빨래터 도비가트에서 빨래를 하는 만 명의 세탁맨들 도비왈라! 60m 높이의 푸리 자간나트사원 꼭대기를 보호 장치하나 없이 올라가 깃발을 다는 깃발맨, 세와! 거리에서 사람들의 귀지를 파주는 귀지 청소 전문 칸사프왈라! 하루 1,500벌이 넘는 옷을 빨아도 4천원이 하루 수입의 전부이고, 귀지를 파주고 받는 돈은 고작 10루피, 우리 돈 240원에 그치지만 그들은 평생 그 일을 해야 한다.
그들의 후손들 역시 대를 이어 같은 일을 해야 한다.
관대한 나라 인도
인도인들은 모든 종교에 너무나도 관대하다.
힌두교의 땅 인도에서 다른 종교가 발 부칠 틈이 있을까 생각했다면 큰 오산이다.
로마제국의 박해를 피해 인도로 온 유대인들과 이슬람의 박해를 피해 인도로 온 파르시들!
그들은 이방인으로서의 핍박받는 삶이 아닌 인도 경제의 중심지에서 그들의 신(神)을 섬기며 평화롭게 살아가고 있다.
인류 역사상 가장 미움을 받았던 유대인들도 결속력이 강한 파르시들도 타종교와 타문화에 관대한 인도 땅이 아니었다면 그들의 언어와 풍습, 종교를 지키며 당당히 살아갈 수 있었을까?
가는 곳마다 다른 나라에 와있는 듯한 착각을 불러일으키는 인도,그러나 인도는 인도라는 테두리 안에서 다양한 모든 것들을 포용하며 하나의 인도로 빛을 내고 있었다.
