어릴 적 도봉산 중턱에 살면서 자연스레 산을 오르내리게 된 엄홍길.
평지를 오래 걷는 것보다 산길을 오르는 것이 더 쉽다는 그는 더 높은 산을 오르고 싶은 열망으로 히말라야 8,000m 16좌 완등을 이뤄냈다.
1988년 세 번의 도전 끝에 정복한 산, 에베레스트.
동료들의 희생으로 인해 수없이 좌절을 했지만 산에 대한 마음을 버릴 수 없었고 오히려 이대로 포기할 수 없다는 오기가 생겼다.
그렇게 두 번의 실패를 딛고 이루어낸 세 번째 도전의 성공을 통해 실패에 대한 두려움을 떨쳐 낼 수 있었고 이후에 도전하는 등반에 대한 자신감과 용기를 얻을 수 있었다.
2007년 로체샤르를 등정함으로써 히말라야 16좌 등정 신화를 이룬 산악인 엄홍길.
무수한 실패와 신체의 일부를 도려내야 했던 사고, 동료들의 희생, 그리고 생사의 갈림길에서조차 포기하지 않고 정상을 향해 끊임없이 나아간 그를 통해 실패가 있었기에 더욱 아름다운 삶을 엿볼 수 있다.
열정과 도전, 실패를 두려워하지 않는 의지의 한국인, 엄홍길!
