남가뢰는 딱지날개가 매우 짧고 배가 기형적으로 큰 곤충입니다.
봄철 쑥을 먹고 자라며, 암컷은 한번에 2000개, 평생 1만개가 넘는 알을 낳고 살고 있습니다.
남가뢰는 어떻게 종을 보존 할까요?
1.엉겅퀴류 식물에 오르는 남기뢰 애벌래들, 2.뒤영벌에 올라탄 남가뢰 애벌레들, 3.남가뢰의 배에 붙어 칸다리딘을 얻고 있는 홍날개 남가뢰는 알에서 깨어나자마자 엉겅퀴류 식물로 기어 올라갑니다.
바로 뒤영벌이 좋아하는 꽃을 찾아 이동하는 것이죠. 뒤영벌이 올 것 같은 길목에서 남가뢰 애벌레들은 뒤영벌이 오기를 기다립니다. 긴 기다림 후 뒤영벌이 날아와 꽃물을 먹는 순간, 남가뢰 애벌레들은 뒤영벌의 몸 위에 올라탑니다. 뒤영벌들은 몸에 달라붙은 남가뢰 애벌레를 털어냅니다. 그럼에도 떨어지지 않은 십여 마리의 남가뢰 애벌레들만이 뒤영벌의 집으로 갈 수 있습니다. 뒤영벌의 벌집에서 남가뢰 애벌레들은 뒤영벌의 애벌레와 알, 꽃가루를 먹으며 자라게 됩니다. 무사히 집에 온다고 해서 끝나는 것은 아닙니다.
뒤영벌의 눈에 띄면 물려 죽기 때문에 눈을 피해 살아가야 합니다. 남가뢰 애벌레들은 2년이란 긴 시간 이후 뒤영벌의 벌집에서 나와 땅위로 올라옵니다. 땅위로 올라온 남가뢰들을 기다리고 있는 곤충이 있습니다.
바로 홍날개입니다. 홍날개 수컷들은 남가뢰의 관절에서 나오는 칸다리딘을 섭취하기 위해 남가뢰를 습격합니다.
마치 과거 남가뢰 애벌레들이 뒤영벌에게 달라붙었던 것처럼 말이죠. 홍날개 수컷들은 칸다리딘이 많이 있음을 과시 하며, 짝짓기를 할 때 칸다리딘을 사용합니다. 독 성분이 있는 칸다리딘을 사용하여 다른 곤충으로부터 자신의 알을 보호하기 위함이죠. 뒤영벌과 남가뢰, 그리고 홍날개의 뒤틀린 악연은 어디까지 이어질까요?
