1942년 일본 교토에서 태어난 재일 교포 2세 김성근 감독은 20대 초반 한국에 건너와 귀화해 한인의 삶을 살았다.
일본 가쓰라 고등학교에서 투수로서 선수 생활을 시작하였고 재일 교포 학생야구단, 동아대, 교통부 선수를 거쳐 국가대표 선수로 발탁되었으며 이후 기업은행에 입단하여 발군의 활약을 펼치지만 부상으로 인해 1968년 선수 생활을 마감하였다.
투수로서 혹사당해 마운드를 떠나야 했던 사정과 최고의 야구감독으로 성장하기까 지 고생도 많이 했다는 김성근 감독. 그는 최하위 팀을 맡아 선수들의 정신력을 무장시키고 키워낸 시대 지도자이자, 명장이다.
프로야구 세계에서 눈 밖에 나 있는 야생마 얼굴을 보여주던 김성근 감독은 2007년 대역전극으로 한국시리즈를 우승하면서 50여 년간 맺힌 한을 풀었다.
그런 그가 밟아온 삶 속에는 야구인으로서만이 아니라 한국과 일본 어느 한 나라에도 속하지 못하는 재일교포들의 삶이 녹아 있다.
오직 선수들을 위해 자신의 모든 것을 바치고, 자신의 길을 꿋꿋하게 걸었던 김성근 감독. 무수한 야구팀을 전전하며 4강 감독이라는 폄하에 시달렸지만 자신의 삶을 적극적으로 살아가며 패배에 무릎 꿇지 않고 앞을 향해 전진했던 그의 고단하지만 빛나는 삶이 펼쳐진다.

He started to play as a pitcher at Katsura High School in Japan, and was selected as a national player by the Korean Baseball Team, Donga University, and the Ministry of Transportation of Japan. After joining IBK, he played an outstanding role but ended his career in 1968 due to injuries .
As a pitcher, Kim Sung-geun said that he had to leave the mound and suffered from growing up as the best baseball manager. He is the team leader and the best player in the team, armed with the lowest team to arm and empower the athletes.
Kim Sung-keun, who showed off the face of a wild horse in the professional baseball world, released a Korean series for the past 50 years.
In his life, he lives not only as a baseball player but also as a member of the Korean-Japanese family who can not belong to either Korea or Japan.
