가난 속에서 대한민국 체조사상 올림픽 첫 금메달을 획득한 양학선 선수와 일등 조력자, 그의 어머니의 이야기를 담는다.

바로 런던 올림픽에서 금메달을 거머쥔 양학선 선수의 과거 이야기다.
그는 어떻게 성공할 수 있었을까?
“선생님, 학선이 운동 안 한다고 하니까 때려죽이던지 살리던지 나는 모르겠으니 선생님 아들 하십시오. 그래서 무조건 선생님한테 맡겨 놓고 전 와버렸어요.“

“진짜 잡아주는 사람 하나도 없으면 운동을 그만 둘 수도 있잖아요. 혼내라고. 혼내서라도 애를 잘 돌아올 수 있게 해주라고 하고 가셨어요.”

지독한 가난이 싫어 수차례 집을 나갔다는 양학선. 그때마다 그를 잡아준 건 어머니였다.
아들이 이해할 때까지 조곤조곤 타이르는 교육방식을 고수하다가도 때론 ‘내 자식 아니오’ 엄포를 놓는 어머니의 교육철학.
어머니의 교육 덕에 양학선 선수는 체조를 계속할 수 있었다고 한다.
그리고 또 한 차례 다가온 집안의 위기!
아버지의 어깨 인대가 끊어지면서 생계의 위협을 받게 된 것이다.
가장 역할을 다하지 못한다는 좌절감에 우울증 약을 달고 살게 된 아버지.
양학선 선수는 그런 아버지를 위해 형과 함께 고창의 시골 땅을 마련해 드렸다.
지금도 훈련수당과 후원금은 모두 부모님께 드린다는 효심 깊은 아들.
가난은 양학선 선수를 절망에 빠뜨리기보다 더욱 이를 악물게 만들었다.
“매달 학선이가 훈련해서 안 쓰고 다 보내주고 후원금 들어오는 거 다 보내주고. 그러니까 밥 먹고 살았지.”
