서울에서 고등학교를 졸업하고 일본으로 건너가 동경대학에서 미술사와 미학, 음악학, 작곡을 공부한 백남준.
1956년 독일로 유학을 떠나 뮌헨대와 프라이부르크 음악학교, 쾰른대학에서 현대음악을 전공한 그는, 이후 전위음악가 존 케이지를 만나 자신의 인생과 예술세계에 일대 전환을 일으켰다.
데뷔작인 ‘존 케이지에 대한 오마주 Homage a John Cage’ 공연 중에 바이올린을 내리쳐 부수는 해프닝을 보여준 것이다.
이 작품을 계기로 평생의 예술적 동지인 요제프 보이스와 인연을 맺게 되었다.
1961년에는 플럭서스 운동의 창시자 조지 마키우나스와 첫 만남을 갖고 플럭서스(Fluxus)의 창립 멤버 가운데 한 명이 되었으며, 이후 요제프 보이스 등과 함께 독일 플럭서스 운동을 주도하기도 했다.
1963년 독일 부퍼탈의 파르나스 갤러리에서 열린 첫 개인전 ‘음악의 전시-전자TV Exposition of Music-Electronic Television’에서는 텔레비전 13대와 피아노 3대, 소음기 등을 배치하고, 이 가운데 피아노 1대가 요제프 보이스에 의해 파괴되는 퍼포먼스를 시행했다.
이 전시를 시작으로 비디오 아트의 선구적 활동을 전개한 백남준은 1964년 뉴욕에 정착한 후 첼리스트 샬럿 무어만과 함께 음악, 퍼포먼스, 비디오를 결합한 작품들을 선보이며 센세이션을 일으켰다.
1996년 6월, 뇌졸중으로 쓰러져 몸의 왼쪽 신경이 모두 마비되었지만 신체장애를 극복하고 국내외에서 도시와 영상전, 교과서 미술전, 독일 비디오 조각전, 97바젤국제아트페어, 개인전, 98서울판화미술제, 한국현대미술전-시간 등의
전시회를 열었다.
2006년 1월 29일 미국 자택에서 74세의 나이로 타계한 故백남준.

Paik graduated from high school in Seoul and went to Japan to study art history, aesthetics, musicology and composition at Tokyo University.
After studying in Germany in 1956, he majored in contemporary music at the University of Munich, the Freiburg School of Music and the University of Cologne. He later met with avant-garde musician John Cage to transform his life and art world.
His debut feature, "Homage a John Cage," was a show of breaking down a violin during his performance.
This work has led to the connection with the lifelong artistic comrade Joseph Boyce.
In 1961, he became one of the founding members of Fluxus with his first encounter with the founder of the Fluxus movement, George Maciunas, and later led the German Fluxus movement with Joseph Boyce.
In 1963, the first solo exhibition "Music Exhibition - Electronic Exposition of Music-Electronic Television" held at the Parnas Gallery in Wuppertal, Germany, arranged 13 TVs, 3 pianos, and a silencer, and one piano was recorded by Joseph Boyce I carried out the destructive performance.
Paik began his career as a pioneer in video art, and after he settled in New York in 1964, he created a sensation with cellist Charlotte Moore and his works combining music, performance and video.
In June 1996, he suffered a stroke and paralyzed all the left nerves of his body.
