결혼 후 행복한 나날을 보낸 그녀에게 커다란 시련이 연이어 닥쳤다.
첫 번째 시련은 바로 큰 아들의 자폐성 발달장애 판정.
그저 남보다 말이 조금 늦는 것뿐이라고 생각하던 큰 아들 준영이에게 청천벽력 같은 판정이 내려지고 말았다.
자신의 팔을 물어뜯고, 벽에 머리를 박는 등 감당할 수 없는 준영이의 행동에 혜정 씨는 끝없는 자괴감과 죄책감에 우울증까지 겪게 되는데.
“준영이 데리고 세상에서 사라져버릴까하는 생각도 많이 했어요. 잠을 잘 땐, 이대로 영원히 깨어나지 않았으면 좋겠다고 생각 한 적도 많고요.”

곧이어 이어진 두 번째 시련. 2006년. 준영이의 불장난이 커다란 사고를 불렀다.
가족의 추억과 재산이 담긴 아파트는 물론 이웃집까지 번져버린 화마는 혜정 씨에게 3억 원이라는 큰 빚더미를 안겨주고 말았다.
하룻밤 사이에 집도 재산도 모두 다 잃고 길거리로 나앉게 된 혜정 씨의 가족.
