프랑스 대리공사와 조선 무희의 사랑, 그 세기의 로맨스!
1858년 조선이 서양에 최초로 소개된 이후, 푸른 눈의 여행자들이 점차 조선을 찾기 시작했다. 특히 구한말에는 많은 외국인들이 조선과 조선인에 관한 책을 써서 고국에 이 미지의 나라를 알렸는데, 그 중에서도 최근 이폴리트 프랑댕의 조선 여행기, <En Coree (한국에서)>가 주목을 받고 있다.
책에 따르면 고종 때의 관기였던 리진은 결혼을 약속한 프랑스 대리공사, 콜랭 드 플랑시와 함께 프랑스로 떠난다. 리진은 1893년부터 3년간 파리에 머물게 되는데, 이 시간동안 리진의 인생은 송두리째 바뀐다. 리진은 파리에서 과연 어떤 생활을 했을까?
리진, 조선 여인 최초로 프랑스의 근대 문물과 만나다.
"천하만국의 서울 가운데 서울". 1885년 최초로 프랑스에 간 조선인, 유길준은 파리를 '세계의 으뜸'이라 칭송하였다. 당시 프랑스는 전 세계에서 긁어모은 금과 최고급 사치품, 그리고 모든 형태의 예술과 신기술이 빛나던 곳이었다.
파리! 19세기의 최첨단 도시에서 리진은 봉건 조선에서는 접할 수 없었던 서구의 근대 문화와 앞선 지식을 배운다. 그녀는 플랑시가 붙여준 가정교사로부터 프랑스어를 배워, 자유롭게 언어를 구사하게 되면서 프랑스의 다양한 책을 읽는다. 특히 성경과 프랑스 법전을 통해 자유와 평등의 가치를 깨닫게 된다. 파리에서 그녀는 주체적인 자의식을 발견하고, 예술적 재능도 마음껏 발휘하게 되는데..
조선인도, 프랑스인도 될 수 없었던, 파리의 이방인
19세기 말, 조선이 일본의 위협을 받고 있을 무렵 프랑스에서는 조선의 문화가 황금기를 맞고 있었다. <춘향전>, <심청전> 등이 번역되어 출간되었고, 조선에 관한 책들이 쏟아져 나왔다. 바로 그 때 파리 한가운데에 있던 조선 여인 리진은 프랑스인들에게 더욱 큰 주목을 받는다. 게다가 놀라운 예술적 자질을 가진 리진은 예술과 살롱의 천국인 파리에서 프랑스인들의 감탄과 찬사를 듣게 된다.
그러나 어느 날부턴가 리진은 점점 기력을 잃어가고, 결국 심각한 우울증까지 앓게 되는데... 그녀에게 무슨 일이 일어났던 것일까?
조선 최초의 근대여성 리진, 그 비극적 최후
1896년 4월 27일, 리진은 다시 조선으로 돌아온다. 그녀의 연인, 콜랭 드 플랑시가 조선의 3대 프랑스 공사로 취임하게 되었기 때문이다.
그런데 조선에 돌아온 후 얼마 지나지 않아 리진은 스스로 금조각을 삼켜 스스로 목숨을 끊는다. 그녀는 고국 땅에서 왜 죽음을 선택하게 된 것일까?

At that very moment, Chosun woman Lyjin, who was in the middle of Paris, received more attention from the French people. In addition, with its incredible artistic qualities, Lizan admires French admiration and praise in Paris, a paradise for arts and salons.
One day, however, Lizin gradually lost her energy and eventually became seriously depressed ... what happened to her?
The first tragedy of modern Korean women,
On April 27, 1896, Lysine returns to Chosun. It is because her lover, Collier de Plananci, took over as the third French company of the Joseon Dynasty.
